Maria Bernadine Simms

Maria Bernadine Simms, lovingly known as “Bernie” to her family and friends, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2025, in Summerville, South Carolina. Born on November 25, 1939, in Charleston, South Carolina, she was the cherished daughter of Robert Berry Perritte and Viola Richardson.  

Maria devoted her life to her family, serving as a loving mother and grandparent. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Lavonne Turner; her granddaughter, Catherine Payne (Christopher); her great-grandsons, William Turner and Brandon Payne; and a large and loving extended family that includes 35 nieces and nephews. Maria was predeceased by her husband, Clarence Simms, her daughter, Hope Simms, her grandson, William Turner, as well as seven brothers and three sisters who all held a special place in her heart.  

A service in honor of Maria’s life will be held at Maranatha Baptist Church, with the exact time and date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations sent to the church at 453 N Mano St, Moncks Corner, SC 29461, as a way to celebrate her legacy of love and community.  

 Maria will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to her family and friends. Her warmth, kindness, and generous spirit touched the lives of all who knew her. Though she has departed from this earth, her love will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
