Kernersville, NC-Mr. David Lee Comer, 78, passed away peacefully on Monday
November 3, 2025. He was born on March 12, 1947, in Forsyth County, to the late Mack Chambers Comer, Jr. and Ruby Lee (Flynt) Comer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Rita June Grant.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patricia (Calhoun) Comer of the home;
two children Amy Henson (Andy) of Kernersville and Adam Comer (Monica) of Kernersville; one sister Betty Elizabeth West (Butch) of Walkertown; four grandchildren, Mason Bruce, Caleb Henson, Ethan Henson and Thiago Comer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
David was a hard worker all his life and this started when he was 12 years old
and worked for his father, at Mack’s Shell Service Station. David proudly
graduated from East Forsyth High School in June of 1965. In the spring of 1966
David was drafted by the U.S. Army. He was sent to South Korea where he
served from 1966-1968. David was a member of the 8th Army 304 Signal
Corps. After his service he began his working career as a mechanic at Tri-City
Trailer Repair in Kernersville. In 1984 David worked for Tim Dwiggins
Engineering and started building NASCAR race cars. In 1990 David started work for his Uncle Everrett Smith and first cousin, Phillip Smith, at E.L. Smith and Sons in Kernersville. It was at this time that David started working on
Philip Smith’s race car as a fabricator. The cousins won over a dozen races
over the years.
The family would like to thank special friend of 65 years, Harold Shelton who
was always there and ready to help where needed. And a special thank you to
the compassionate nurses and staff at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in
Winston-Salem.
No services will be held at this time.
