David T Butler, 94, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away on November 8th in Redondo Beach, CA. In his final days, Dave was surrounded by the people and comforts he treasured most: family and friends, his favorite USMC cap, a soft blanket, a comfy couch and an ample supply of chocolate chip cookies.
Dave is survived by his sons David (Linda) and Sean (Mary), daughter Kathryn Krinsky (Dave), and sister Judith Citarrella (Anthony). He is also survived by his four step-daughters, Jill Hoffman (John), Judith Klein (Michael), Patricia Genzardi (Joseph) and Mary Jo Armand (John) - as well as dozens of loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wives, Maureen (nee Jones, 1992) and Mary (nee Rasche, 2020); daughter Mary Keir Collins; his parents, David and Mary (nee Freeman); and sister Alicia Butler.
Born in New York City on December 28, 1930, Dave was raised with his sisters in Haverstraw, NY surrounded by numerous Freeman aunts, uncles and cousins, and under the watchful eyes of his mother and grandmother, Alice Freeman. Though his later years took him to the Jersey shore, to Florida and, finally to Manhattan Beach, CA, Dave's heart remained always with Haverstraw, his boyhood friends and the Freeman clan.
After graduating from Haverstraw High - where he was known for his talent on the baseball diamond - Dave enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He trained in Camp Lejeune and Parris Island before serving overseas. Upon returning home, Dave married Maureen and they settled in Garnerville, NY where together, for thirty-six years, they raised their two sons and two daughters, until Maureen's passing in 1992. Dave's work life found him, by day, at Orange and Rockland Utilities and by night, as head of the evening maintenance crew at the Rockland County office buildings. A true sportsman at heart, Dave could always carve out time to root for his beloved San Francisco Giants and to offer up a Bronx cheer for the NY Yankees.
In 1996, Dave married Mary Stecz, and together they embraced their golden years as snowbirds. The couple divided their time between Wall, NJ, and Greenacres, FL, and any destination where their grandchildren might be shining on stage or on the field - recitals, concerts, graduations, soccer matches, basketball games, baseball, football - Dave was proudly cheering from the sidelines. He was their biggest fan. Leisure time traveling with old friends from Rockland and new companions in Florida took Dave and Mary across Europe and the Caribbean many times over during their years together.
Dave will be remembered for many things: his sharp, playful wit; his love of crosswords; his passion for sports of every stripe; his appreciation of a good diner breakfast; his vast knowledge of old musicals; and his steadfast loyalty to flag and country. But above all, he will be remembered for his generous spirit and devotion to faith and family.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 10th, 2025, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at TJ McGowan & Sons Funeral Home, Haverstraw, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 am at St. Peter's Church, Haverstraw, with interment at Frederick Loescher Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 220 Brick Church Rd., Spring Valley, NY.
