Edward (Ed) James Spellman was born in Tewksbury, Massachusetts on July 19, 1934. He grew up in nearby Concord, Massachusetts, and after graduation from Concord High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. A veteran of both the Korean War and Vietnam War, he served in the United States Air Force from June 27, 1952 to September 30, 1972, earning the rank of Master Sergeant. During his 20 years of service, he was assigned to duty at many bases across the United States of America and one tour of duty in Hof, Germany. After retiring from an honorable and distinguished career, he moved with his family to New Carrollton, Maryland, where he began a career in the field of Information Technology, eventually retiring a second time in July of 1996.
Our dad’s love was to God, his family, his country, and his community. He served as a Eucharistic minister, lector, and usher at numerous Catholic parishes. He headed up several ministries including RCIA and the Men’s Holy Name Society at those churches alongside the love of his life--his wife, Alice. Despite long hours at work, he still found time to spend with the family and always put the family’s interest first. The family enjoyed outings and special dinners together every Sunday. Whether the family was sight-seeing, going on picnics, or visiting extended family and friends, the time was always filled with fun, laughter, and love! Edward also acquired and was quite accomplished in numerous hobbies and sports, including bowling, playing racquetball, golfing, and painting beautiful landscapes. He enjoyed fishing from his boat in Cape Cod. Ed was an enthusiastic photographer and learned to develop his own film. He was a talented woodworker and crafted many pieces of furniture, which his children and grandchildren treasure. A master artisan invited Ed to travel to England to learn how to craft the traditional trug basket, used in gardening throughout the United Kingdom.
Ed was predeceased by his wife, Alice Leora (Hovatter) of Nutter Fort, West Virginia, and a son, Michael Joseph Spellman, who died in infancy. He is survived by his seven children – Lynne Anne Vera (Glenn) from Melbourne, FL; Michelle Elizabeth Boland (Patrick) from Albany, OR; Edward James Spellman II (Sandra) from Odenton, MD; Carole Teresa Cowsert (James) from Grapevine, TX; Barbara Alice Melvin (Thomas) from Rockledge, FL; Patrick Kearin Spellman from Orlando, FL; and Andrew Francis Spellman (Julie) from Wylie, TX. He also leaves behind numerous family and friends. The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the St. Stephen’s Way, Melbourne, Florida. Edward will be buried at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery with full military honors.
