Obituary for Shirley Ann Gonzales

Shirley Ann GonzalesJune 29, 1957 – December 4, 2025

With profound love and deep sorrow, the family of Shirley Ann Gonzales announces her passing. On December 4, 2025, Shirley left this world with her husband by her side. Her departure was the result of a tragic and unexpected accident—abrupt, sudden, and far too soon. In those final moments, it was her husband, her lifelong companion of 47 years, who held her, offering the comfort and love that had defined their life together. Though her passing came without warning, she was not alone; she was wrapped in the presence of the person who loved her most.

Born on June 29, 1957, Shirley lived a life defined by devotion, strength, and a spirit full of vibrance. She shared a remarkable marriage with her loving husband, Elmer Oliver Gonzales, a bond that stood as an enduring testament to partnership, loyalty, and unconditional love.

Shirley was the proud mother of her only son, Elmer Oliver Gonzales Jr., and she welcomed his wife, Samara Gonzales, as a daughter of her heart. Her joy only grew as her family expanded, and she cherished every moment with her grandchildren—Janissa Hornbuckle (married to Davaughn Hornbuckle), Javonni Dass (married to Karen Dass), and Jaselle Dass-Gonzales. One of Shirley’s greatest blessings in life was meeting and loving her only great-grandson, Enzo Hornbuckle, who brought a bright new light into her world.

Shirley’s love for her grandchildren was one of the brightest parts of her life. Janissa, her beautiful granddaughter, held a special place in her heart. Shirley loved watching her dance, celebrating every performance and every milestone. She admired the woman Janissa was becoming—strong, graceful, and dedicated. Seeing her grow in her career, step into motherhood, and build a loving marriage filled Shirley with deep pride and joy.

Her bond with Javonni was undeniable—rooted in love, laughter, and, of course, food. Their relationship was full of warmth and tradition, the kind only a grandson and his grandma could share. Shirley was lovingly known as “the grandma with the goodies,” always prepared with treats wherever she went. From bringing breakfast burritos to early morning swim meets, to driving all the way to Fort Collins—both during his college years and after he was married—with homemade tamales and stuffed sopaipillas, she showed her love through every thoughtful delivery. These were cherished rituals that defined their closeness.

Her youngest granddaughter, Jaselle, was her baby girl—her heart. Shirley adored her and never missed a chance to shower her with love. She made sure Jaselle’s music was always queued up on Spotify, spoiled her with candy, and brought her rings—Ring POPs—at every swim meet, lacrosse game, or softball competition. She chauffeured her to practices, called and texted her daily, and lifted her up with encouragement. Shirley nurtured her confidence, her spark, and her spirit, helping shape her into the strong young lady she is becoming.

Shirley will also be remembered for her giving nature, one she expressed most beautifully through the gift of cooking. Food was her love language, and she nourished others with every meal she made. She checked in on everyone—always calling, always texting, always making sure the people she loved were healthy, well, and cared for. Her kindness was active, constant, and heartfelt, shown through the countless ways she offered help, comfort, and compassion.

Shirley did not live a quiet life; she lived a flavorful one. Her words were bold, honest, and full of character. She never stumbled over what needed to be said—she spoke with clarity, conviction, and a fire uniquely her own. Those who knew her will forever remember the strength of her voice, the warmth of her heart, and the unforgettable presence she carried into every room.

Her legacy lives on in the generations she nurtured and in the countless memories held tightly by those who loved her. The family honors her life, her love, and the beautiful mark she has left on their hearts.
