David Somma entered into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on December 14, 2025, in North Port, Florida. David was born on September 18, 1933, in Canarsie Brooklyn, New York.
David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Yolanda Somma, siblings, Salvatore, Danny, Josephine, Celia and Joseph Jr. He is survived by his sister Rose, sons David, Peter and Richard, daughters-in-laws Liz, Lei and Dianne, granddaughter Rebecca and husband Tim, grandson David, great-grandson Gabriel and many nieces and nephews.
David married the love of his life, Margaret, on November 30, 1963. They remained together for nearly 60 years until her death in November 2023. They lived several decades in Canarsie, Brooklyn, where they raised their three sons. David and Margaret then moved to Hawley, Pennsylvania, where they lived for 20 years, before moving to North Port, Florida in 2019.
David graduated from Boys High School in Brooklyn. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy from September 2, 1953 - September 3, 1957, during the Korean War. Following his military service, he worked for the US Postal Service for six months before his 35-year career at the Federal Aviation Administration, where he gave pilots weather briefings until 1989.
After his FAA retirement, David worked for a metal company before becoming the bookkeeper, for many years, at Bethlehem Church, Richmond Hill, Queens, New York.
David loved God. He loved serving in church. Church played a big role in his life. He made a difference in the lives of many young men, who looked to him as a role model. He served as a Senior Royal Rangers Commander for 30 years, in which the boys would have yearly overnight camping trips, where they studied the Bible, learned outdoor survival skills and were served three delicious campfire meals daily. He was very active in church, as an usher and deacon for many years. David also loved Pilgrim Camp in Brant Lake, NY, where in 1947, he became one of the first campers.
David was an avid sports fan. His favorite teams were the New York Mets, the New York Rangers, the New York Giants football team, and the Brooklyn Dodgers. He never got over them moving to California.
He was always current on politics and engaged in world events. He enjoyed a good conversation of sports and politics with his sons. He had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh. David adored his wife, three sons, daughter-in-law’s, grandchildren and great grandson. He loved his family!
