Joan Stewart Camana, 80, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, in San Diego, California. Born on January 8, 1945, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Joan lived a life marked by dedication to education, family, and community service.
Joan pursued her passion for learning at San Diego State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Social Studies. She continued her academic journey by obtaining a Secondary Teaching Credential and later an Administrative Services Credential from the same institution. Furthering her commitment to education, she earned a Master of Arts in Education from United States International University (USIU) in San Diego.
Her professional career was distinguished and impactful. Joan served as an educator and administrator with unwavering commitment to student success. Her leadership and excellence were recognized statewide when she was named Vice Principal of the Year for the State of California for the 1992–93 academic year—a testament to her influence and dedication within the educational community. Joan dedicated 39 years to education retiring as principal of Mt. Carmel High School in 2005. She continued to mentor young principals until 2010.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Joan’s family were everything to her. She was a devoted mother who carried much of the responsibility of raising her two sons, instilling in them lasting values of communication, empathy, humility, and accountability. Her guidance shaped their lives and continues through the families they now raise. She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Peter Camana; her sons, Eric Stewart and Joseph Stewart; her daughters-in-law, Adriane and Elisabetta; her stepdaughter Brittany; and stepson Ryan. She also leaves behind four cherished grandchildren—Mia, Gianna, Isabella, and Kyla—who brought immense joy to her life. Joan is survived by her sister Sandra Le Grand and brother Ralph Altomare. She was predeceased by her brother Michael Altomare.
Joan’s life was enriched by many passions. She found joy in gardening, quilting, reading, and participating in book clubs. Her love for literature and nature reflected the thoughtful and nurturing spirit that defined her character.
A woman of strong will and generous heart, Joan gave back to her community through extensive volunteer work. She shared the comfort of therapy dogs with patients in hospitals, readers in libraries, and residents of senior centers. Her involvement with leadership positions in organizations such as the American Association of University Women (AAUW) San Diego chapter and the Grossmont-Mt. Helix Improvement Association (GMIA) further demonstrated her commitment to civic engagement and lifelong learning.
Joan Stewart Camana will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, educator, community servant, and friend whose legacy lives on through those she touched with kindness and strength.
