Joseph (Joey B) Michael Bernardo, affectionately known by his cherished family as “Poppy Joe” lived a beautiful life as an active member of the North Rockland Community. He was born July 21, 1953, in Nyack, NY and was a devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather who passed away on December 22, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and quiet strength that will be deeply missed.
Joseph shared 49 years of marriage with the love of his life, Stella Paonessa, building a life rooted in commitment, respect, and family. Together they created a home filled with care, laughter, and unwavering support for those they loved. He was the proud father of two daughters, Lauren and Lisa, and was truly an amazing father—steady, devoted, and always there when it mattered most. To his four grandchildren, he was lovingly known as Poppy Joe, a role that brought him immense joy and pride. His presence in their lives was marked by warmth, patience, and unconditional love.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Stella, his two beloved daughters and sons-in-law Lauren (Neil) Myers and Lisa (Dustin) Smith, his four precious grandchildren who brought him joy beyond words (Ava, Jake, Nora, and Thea), sister Lucielle (Jack) Clochessy, and his loving extended family and friends. He is predeceased by his parents Antionette and Joseph and brother (John).
Known to many as “Joey B,” Joseph was a man of integrity who took his responsibilities seriously. He honored his commitments, kept his promises, and lived by his word. While his family was always his greatest priority, the firehouse and the North Rockland community held a special place in his heart and were an important part of his life. Joseph dedicated many years of service as an Equipment Manager with the North Rockland Central School District, where he was ill respected for his strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to the community. He also proudly served as a devoted member of Haverstraw Fire Department Relief Hose Company #3 and remained closely connected to the North Rockland athletic community.
Family was Joseph’s greatest joy and proudest accomplishment. He cherished time spent together, especially their much-loved family vacations to the beaches of Ocean City, MD and North Wildwood, NJ—second only to the lively family gatherings at “Pop’s Place” in Caroga Lake. Upon retirement, he became a professional Poppy and invested some spare time and change in the slots.
Above all else, Joseph will be remembered for the love he gave so freely to his family and friends, the example he set through his actions, and the steady presence he was to so many. His guidance, loyalty, and devotion will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know and love him. Though we grieve his loss, we take comfort in knowing he is at peace, watching over us, and living on through the stories we share.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 29th, 2025, from 4pm-8pm at TJ McGowan Sons Funeral Home in Garnerville, NY. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, December 30th, 2025, at 10am at St. Peter's Church, Haverstraw, followed by interment at St. Peters Cemetery.
