Phyllis "Phyll" Driscoll, née Hoffmann, was born on March 24, 1929, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. She passed away peacefully on December 28, 2025, on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Frank A. Driscoll. Phyll was a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, celebrated for her unwavering independence, strong convictions, and giving spirit. She leaves behind her daughter, Mary Jane Driscoll, and her husband, John Rizzi, of Milford, New Hampshire, her son, F. Peter Driscoll, and his wife, Janet, of Clarkston, Michigan, as well as four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Phyll graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Connecticut College in 1951 as a noted "penny pincher" and "boss-lady who says it with a smile". Her career was marked by a dedication to public service. In Trenton, New Jersey she was involved with the Junior League, served as a volunteer coordinator for the Red Cross, and worked as a business manager for Lawrence Township, New Jersey. Moving to Hilton Head in 1985, she continued her community outreach including as a 25-year volunteer with the Deep Well Project.
She was a voracious reader, talented knitter, and avid golfer. In her later years, she could often be seen early in the morning walking down the middle of Oyster Reef Golf Course's fairways in her distinctive pink "jumpsuit", greeting every groundskeeper by name.
An indomitable spirit, Phyll was well-known for the shrewdness first formally documented in college. She negotiated hard and refused to be taken in by any telemarketer who was unfortunate enough to contact her. Instead, she cultivated many long and trusting relationships that sustained her throughout her life. As she entered her 90s, she held deep gratitude for her beloved neighbors who helped her maintain her cherished independence.
Phyll's Celebration of Life will be held in March 2026, a testament to the many lives she touched throughout her journey. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Deep Well Project, 80 Capital Drive, Hilton Head Island, SC.
As we remember Phyll, let us celebrate the remarkable legacy of a woman who exemplified strength, independence, stubbornness, and love. She will forever be missed but remembered fondly for her vibrant spirit and unwavering commitment to her family and friends.
