Obituary for Duane Smith

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Duane Smith, a beloved father, brother, and friend, who left us on December 22, 2025, in Centralia, Washington, where he had lived for 71 years. Born on March 12, 1936, in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Duane was a man whose life was marked by his unwavering faith, generous spirit, and deep-rooted commitment to his family.

Duane graduated from Chehalis High School in 1954 and later served in the Navy Reserves, showcasing his dedication to both his country and community. On June 18, 1955, he married the love of his life, Jeannette Smith, at Calvary Tabernacle in Centralia. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Duane never remarried after Jeannette's passing, honoring their enduring bond.

As a skilled carpenter, Duane established his own construction company, Smith Construction, where he was known for his hard work and ambition. He took great joy in building furniture and flower boxes for family and friends, expressions of his creativity and care.

Duane was a man of strong faith, deeply involved in the Centralia Community Church of God. He was not only generous with his time but also with his love for others, always ready to lend a helping hand on various projects around the house. He enjoyed singing in the Calvary Cousin's Quartet, filling the lives of those around him with music and warmth.

His passions extended beyond community service, as Duane was an avid fan of the Seattle Seahawks and the Seattle Mariners, often found cheering passionately for his teams. He also embraced simple pleasures, from reading and fishing to indulging in the timeless melodies of old music.

Duane leaves behind a cherished legacy, including his daughter, Debbie Wyman; sons, Gary and Mike Smith; brother, Darrell Smith; nine grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Jeannette, his parents Otis and Hazel Smith, maternal grandparents Sena and Jens Jensen, paternal grandparents Abby and Isaac Smith, and his sisters Doris Anderson and Darlene Keahey.

A graveside service will be held at a later date to honor Duane's life and legacy. While he has departed from this world, his spirit remains alive in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be greatly missed but fondly remembered for his generosity, loyalty, and ambitious spirit.
