Kurt G Vaag

March 19, 1960 – December 16, 2025

Kurt Vaag passed away at home from complications of kidney disease.  His family takes comfort knowing he was able to remain in the home he loved.

Kurt was born in Denver and grew up in Wheat Ridge, where the nearby mountains nurtured his love of the outdoors.  He worked as a chef early in life before earning a degree in applied mathematics from Metropolitan State University of Denver.  Kurt went on to build a long career as a software engineer, retiring this past March.

He was a quiet man, a former tuba player, excellent cook, and a skilled carpenter.  Kurt could fix anything.  He enjoyed solving problems and puzzles and kept a book of Sudoku nearby at all times.  He was also a formidable Scrabble player.  Kurt loved good food, camping, hiking, 1970s- 80s rock music, Western novels, and cheering for the local sports teams, especially the Denver Broncos.  He took pride in his yard and in keeping his home welcoming and well maintained.  Kurt found humor in the world around him, had a quick wit, and a great laugh.  Kurt valued his life-long friendships and he cared deeply for his family.

Kurt is survived by his five siblings: Enid (Rick) Wood, Myra (Bill) Lugsch, Erik (Donna) Vaag, Joel Vaag, and Sara Holland; and by his seven nieces and nephews: Dean Lugsch, Mitch Lugsch, Tristen (Don) Vieaux, Rudy Wade, Maddie Vaag, Tyler Holland, and Veronica Holland.

Kurt wrote the following short poem shortly before his death:  Glorious. Sun beaming off house glass. Brilliant white snow. Dark green pine trees. Puffy white clouds and dark blue skies. Surreal. I have a piece of heaven.

We will miss him greatly.  The family will have a memorial for Kurt sometime during Spring 2026.
