Larry ( Lars) James Wetterhus age 95 passed away peacefully on January 3rd 2026. He was born on February 23rd 1930 to Lars & Mabel Wetterhus in St. Paul, Minnesota, the oldest of their 4 children. Larry graduated from Monroe High School in St Paul, Minnesota in 1947. Ten days later he enlisted in The United States Army. He trained as a medic in San Antonio, Texas and was then stationed at Fort Lawton in Seattle, Washington. He took care of the troops as they headed to Japan, Korea and Alaska for 18 months. Larry then started college at the University of Minnesota in September of 1949. A year later he was called up from the Army Reserves to serve as a medic for the Korean War. He spent 6 months at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin and 6 months at Camp Custer in Michigan. Larry returned to Washington and received his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Puget Sound in 1954. He met his wife, Janet Lee Gregory that year and they married on August 26th, 1956. They were married for 45 years until Janet’s passing in June of 2002. They bought their home in downtown Puyallup in 1960 and raised their two children Cheryl and Gregory. Larry lived in his Puyallup home for 65 years. Larry owned and sold insurance for 35 years in downtown Puyallup at Gregory-Wetterhus Insurance Agency. He was involved in numerous clubs and organizations for over 80 years. He earned his Eagle Scout badge in 1945. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) Fraternity at University of Puget Sound. Larry joined the masonic order in 1963 and was the head of the directors staff with the Afifi Shriners in Tacoma. He was a Rotarian for over 30 years, the Elks and Eagles Club, Tacoma Yacht Club and a member of Lynden Golf and Country Club. He also helped with the Puyallup Fair and the Puyallup Daffodil Festival. He loved to help and serve others and cherished his family deeply. Whatever sport or activity his children or grandchildren were involved in, he was always there to cheer them on. Larry is preceded in death by his wife Janet and daughter Cheryl Welde. Larry is survived by his son Greg (Kelly) Wetterhus. Grandsons Kevin (Hannah) Welde, Zach (Kasey) Steenbergen, Cameron ( Jayden) Welde and Austin Wetterhus. Great grandchildren Koen, Jon, Riley, Owen and Kenna. There will be a memorial service at 10:00am January 23, 2026 at Tahoma National Cemetery and a celebration of life following the memorial.
