Obituary for James Albert Smith

In loving memory of James Albert Smith, who left us on January 3, 2026, weaving his way to the great beyond after a brave battle with cancer. Born on November 18, 1945, in Seattle, Washington, Jim was a true Pacific Northwest gem, always quick to share a laugh.

Jim was the devoted husband of Barbara Backell-Smith, with whom he shared countless joyful moments since their wedding on September 26, 2001. He became a loving step father of two children, Macord Johnson (Judith) and Lacey Johnson. Macord and Judith gave him one wonderful grandchild.

He was previously married to the late Carol Hallquist, who he cherished until her passing on March 24, 2001. Together, they created a beautiful family that James loved dearly. He proudly raised his son, Scott Smith (Din), and lovingly mentored his daughters, Jenifer Cox (Tab) and Carolyn Elliott. James is also survived by his brother, Tom Smith, and his sisters, Kathy Markley (Rick), Debbie Petrick (Ron), and Tena Smith (Dan), along with a lively crew of grandchildren—Brad Cox (Nicole), Tawny Blumenthal (Tyler), Lee Smith, and four great-grandchildren.

A man of many hats, James served his country with pride, dabbling in roles from Military Police to service in the Army Reserve, Air Force, and Air National Guard. He was activated during the Pueblo crisis, and throughout his military career, James opened his home to fellow soldiers, offering a comforting meal or holiday celebration, proving that sometimes a home-cooked meal is the true heart of hospitality.

After hanging up his military uniform, he traded it for a security badge at the Red Wind Casino, affectionately dubbed the "Candy Man" due to his sweet tooth and fondness for sharing treats. His commitment to community service was evident in the time he volunteered for the shut-in and hospital patients and his active role in the prison ministry.

James was as dedicated to his interests as to his loved ones. A proud member of the Yelm Emanuel Lutheran Church and Christ is King Church, he embraced his role as a Chaplain with the American Legion with great honor. He was notorious for his great sense of humor, always finding joy in the simplest of life’s pleasures, like spending afternoons in the garden or sharing stories with friends.

James has left a legacy of laughter, love, and community that will not soon be forgotten.

Friends are invited to join family in celebrating his life at a memorial service on January 16, 2026, at 1 PM, located at Funeral Alternatives, 455 North Street SE, Tumwater, WA 98501.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests donations to the Wounded Warrior Project.

In the spirit of Jim’s giving nature, let’s all remember to share a laugh and kindness with one another; after all, that’s what he would want. Rest easy, James. You’ve earned your peace.
