Brijida Barela Escobedo, born on October 8, 1929, in Safford, Arizona departed this world on January 6, 2026. She passed peacefully surrounded by her family. She leaves a legacy rich with love, strength, and unwavering faith, woven beautifully through the tapestry of her life.
Brijida was a woman of many talents, having enjoyed impressive careers as a seamstress, records clerk, and bailiff. She worked for several years at the Graham County Treasurer’s Office and the Clerk of the Superior Court. Her work reflected her vibrant energy and commitment.
Whether tending to the intricate details of her job or nurturing her family, she approached life with an enthusiasm that inspired everyone around her.
Her love for cooking was legendary. Her kitchen was often filled with the aroma of her delicious meals, bringing family and friends together. She was known for her savory tortillas, tacos, tamales and enchiladas. More than just a source of nourishment, her cooking created cherished memories that will linger long in the hearts of those who had the privilege to partake.
She had profound faith which she demonstrated throughout her life. Through her actions, Brijida instilled strong family values that will be passed down to future generations.
An energetic and witty individual, Brijida had the uncanny ability to spin a tale that captivated everyone, maintaining their rapt attention with her masterful storytelling. She found joy in reading, sewing, crocheting, gardening, and the occasional thrill of casino outings, each hobby reflecting her zest for life.
Brijida's proudest accomplishments were her 53-year marriage, nurturing her children and extended family, and her volunteer work at St. Rose of Lima church. She held dear the memory of marrying the love of her life, Pedro Escobedo Jr., on April 2, 1949, a partnership that brought her endless joy. Giving birth to her beautiful children: Geneva, Pete, Edward, and the late Tony and Benjamin, was another treasure in her life. Further, she cherished her pilgrimage trips to Italy and Chimayo, New Mexico where her faith deepened.
She is survived by her loving children, Geneva Escobedo, Pedro Escobedo III, and Edward (Josephine) Escobedo, as well as her beloved sister, Victoria Calonge. Brijida was a proud grandmother to 12 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren, each one a testament to her enduring legacy of love.
Brijida now joins her dearly departed family, including her father, Julian Barela, her mother, Edelmira Barela, her husband, Pedro Escobedo Jr., and her sons, Anthony and Benjamin, along with her cherished grandsons, Jacob and Justin Escobedo.
