Robert Stanley Bowers was born on November 21, 1931, in Bismarck, North Dakota, and passed away on December 30, 2025. He graduated from Bismarck High School in 1949 and went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1953 from Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa.
It was at Westmar College that Bob met the love of his life, Marlene Shelton. Their story together began there and continued for more than seven decades. Bob and Marlene were married on June 6, 1952, in Marlene’s hometown of Olivet, South Dakota—a partnership rooted in faith, love, and deep commitment.
Bob continued his education, receiving his Master of Divinity degree from Western Evangelical Seminary in 1956. Following graduation, Bob and Marlene moved to McClusky, North Dakota, where Bob faithfully served as pastor of both the McClusky and Mercer Evangelical Brethren churches at the same time. During their years in McClusky, they welcomed their two oldest sons, David Lee and Daniel Jon.
In 1963, Bob moved his family to Salem, Oregon, where he pastored Middle Grove Evangelical Church for nine years. During that time, their youngest son, Mark Robert, was born. Bob continued his ministry at Milwaukee Evangelical Church from 1972 to 1974.
In 1974, Bob earned a master’s degree in education, beginning a new chapter in his life. He first taught at Salem Academy and later served as principal for five years. Bob eventually returned to pastoral ministry, ending his career as Associate Pastor at Salem Evangelical Church alongside Pastor Randy Butler. Bob retired in 1997.
In retirement, Bob and Marlene became what they lovingly referred to as “professional travelers,” enjoying the freedom to explore and experience life together after years of faithful service.
Above all else, Bob loved his family. Each morning, he and Marlene prayed together for their children and loved ones—a quiet ritual that reflected the foundation of their lives. Bob was known for his competitive spirit, a trait he proudly passed on to his sons and their wives. Many treasured evenings and vacations were spent at Schooner Landing, where card games stretched late into the night and memories were made that will be cherished forever.
Bob was preceded in death by his youngest son, Mark, and by his beloved wife, Marlene. We take comfort in knowing he is reunited with them.
He is survived by his sons, David and Daniel; his daughters-in-law, Tammy, Teresa, and Janette; his grandchildren, Brock, BreeAnna, Dusty, Skyler, and Emma; and his great-grandchildren, Lilly, Sutton, Isla, Callan, Theo, and Autumn. His legacy lives on through them, in lives shaped by his faith, his example, and his love.
Robert Stanley Bowers lived a life of service, devotion, and quiet strength.
He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
