Charles Wesley Gibson, age 91, of Mount Carmel went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 18, 2026 after a lengthy illness at his home surrounded by his family. Charles was born in Snowflake, VA on November 24, 1934 to Toby and Emily Gibson. After the passing of his mother, he was raised by his aunt and uncle Ora and Jay Rhoton in Clinchport, VA. He graduated from Rye Cove High School and began working at Eastman-Kodak soon after. Raised on a farm he grew up knowing the struggle of hard work, and this formed in him a strong work ethic.

In 1958 he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served overseas in Germany. After returning home he met the love of his life Glenda Faye Hurley. They were married for 38 years demonstrating to everyone around them what God intended for marriage to be. Charles served as Glenda’s loving caretaker after her cancer diagnosis until her passing in 2001.

He was a member of Ridgeview Baptist Church forming some of his deepest friendships in his Sunday School class and weekly Bible Study. It was at Ridgeview Baptist Church that he met his special friend Jackie Pendleton; they spent the next 20 years together sharing a close and loving relationship until her passing in 2024.

Charles enjoyed being outdoors, sitting on his porch was one of his greatest joys. He saw and treasured the beauty of God’s creation; he loved to watch the birds and wildlife in his backyard. He was happiest with his hands in the dirt, most of his life he raised a garden to both feed his family and to share with others. Charles loved woodworking and transforming a piece of wood into something useful or beautiful to give away. His generosity knew no bounds whether it was his time talent or treasure. Charles was salt and light to those who were blessed to know him. Charles was saved on January 21, 1971. He had a true burden for those who are lost and witnessed whenever he had an opportunity.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Glenda Faye Gibson; siblings Elsie Kate Smith, Lucille Gibson Nunley Bledsoe, Wilbur “Bill” Gibson, Ted E. Gibson, Clarence Richard Gibson, Sr., Ellis Gene (Gibson) Yokley, Ruth Taylor Scott, and Juanita Katherine Gibson.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter Kimberly Johnson; son-in-law Phillip Johnson; special cousin Jessie (Bob) Cloud; as well as a host of extended family and friends.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Crystal and the Ballad Hospice Team; special friends/neighbors Frances and Wesley Surgener; and pastors Jon Rogers and Karl Berndt.

A visitation of family and friends will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Carter-Trent Funeral Home - Church Hill. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at 11:00 am at Church Hill Memory Gardens with Pastor Jon Rogers officiating. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 am.

In lieu of flowers the family asked that memorial donations be made to Ridgeview Baptist Church or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
