Barbara Helen Jenicek, 89, of Merritt Island, Florida, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026, after a brief illness, surrounded by those she loved. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Barbara’s life was one of courage, faith, and unwavering love for her family.
Born on December 25, 1936, in Banja Luka, Yugoslavia, Barbara was the eldest of three daughters. Her childhood was marked by resilience and hope; she survived World War II and fled her homeland with her family, eventually finding refuge in a displaced persons camp in Germany. At age 14, Barbara immigrated to the United States, beginning a new chapter of life built on strength and optimism.
Her family settled in St. Louis, Missouri, home to a large Croatian population. It was there that she met and married her husband of 68 years, Kenneth Jenicek. They moved to Cocoa Beach, Florida while he was stationed in the Air Force, and although they left many times for work, Cocoa Beach was always home to them. Together they raised four daughters, Pamela (Thomas) Walters, Deborah (John) Evans, Laura (Gary) Walsh, and Tina Jenicek. Throughout this time, Barbara excelled in creating a beautiful and gracious home, filled with flowers and music, enjoyed by the entire family and their many friends. She was a gifted seamstress and sewed most of her daughter’s clothes throughout their childhood. She also was an amazing carpool driver, chauffeuring her daughters and their friends to many extracurricular activities.
Barbara was devoutly Catholic, and belonged to Church of Our Saviour, Cocoa Beach. She and Kenneth were very active volunteers, serving on the Fair Committee, the School Fundraising Committee, Special Ministers of the Eucharist, Adoration Chapel, and other church groups. Many of her best friends, and her best times, were involving ministry to the church. She also volunteered for many years as a Pink Lady at Cape Canaveral hospital.
Barbara enjoyed traveling, and she and Kenneth took many trips together. Some of her favorite places were Alaska, the river cruises of Europe, and the great American West.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents Anton and Nevenka Beler, her son Keith, her sister Vesna, and brother-in-law Bob Farwell. She is survived by her husband Kenneth, her sister Mary Zangriles (Pete), her sister-law Marlene Smith, her daughters and their spouses, nine grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She was an inspiration to all who met her and knew her; she appreciated all that life gave her, and she made the most of any circumstance. She always expressed her gratitude for her long life filled with wonderful experiences, and for her loving family. She truly embodied the adage of “a life well lived.”
A funeral service for Barbara will be held Saturday March 21, 2026, at 1:00 pm at Church of Our Saviour, 5301 N. Atlantic Ave, Cocoa Beach, FL 32931.
