Joe Roy Lujan, age 80, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the city he proudly called home for most of his life.
Joe was born on September 6, 1945, and from a young age embodied the values of hard work, dedication, and family. At just 16 years old, he began his lifelong career as a roofer. His strong work ethic led him to start Lujan’s Roofing in 1981, a successful small business built on honesty, craftsmanship, and trust. Joe proudly served his community through his trade until his retirement from roofing in 2009.
Never one to slow down, Joe went on to serve as a school crossing guard beginning in 2010 in the Adobe Acres neighborhood, where he lived for 62 years. He became a beloved and familiar presence, known and admired by families, neighbors, and especially the children of Adobe Acres Elementary School. The children loved Joe, and he took great pride in protecting and serving his community with care, patience, and dedication.
Joe was deeply devoted to his family, whom he loved above all else. He is survived by his loving wife, Bertha Lujan; his oldest son, Robert Lujan, and wife Julie Lujan; and his youngest son, Roy Lujan Jr., and fiancée Jacklyn Sanchez. He was preceded in death by his middle son, who passed on November 21, 2020, whom he carried in his heart always.
He is also survived by his brothers, Toby Lujan and Jerry Lujan, and his sisters, Irene Rael, Tommy Gonzales, and Hazel Paiz, along with many extended family members and dear friends. Joe was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and a joyful great-grandfather to seven great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense happiness.
Joe loved the outdoors, especially fishing along the Pecos River and spending time camping. He enjoyed watching NBA and NFL games and was his family’s biggest supporter—never missing a sporting event, school function, birthday, or celebration. His presence was constant, his encouragement unwavering.
Later in life, Joe became a devoted Christian, finding great peace and purpose in his faith. He loved reading his Bible and learning more about God at every opportunity, living his faith through kindness, generosity, and service to others.
Joe will be remembered for his warmth, kindness, giving nature, and unwavering love for his family and community. He was a man who showed up, worked hard, loved deeply, and left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
Services will be held on Sunday February 1st, 2026, at 1 pm at the Three Angels Seventh-day Adventist Church, located at 10750 Sunset Gardens Rd SW, Albuquerque, NM 87121 with reception to follow.
Joe Roy Lujan’s legacy lives on through the many lives he touched, the family he cherished, and the community he faithfully served.
