Lucille “Meme” Martineau, 89, passed away on January 16, 2026, at her home in Davenport, Florida—likely after having already completed several tasks for the day.
Born in rural New Brunswick, Canada, between World Wars I and II, Lucille developed a knack and passion for all things arduous and laborious. She went on to teach herself, master, and practice (a slightly intimidating) number of trades, including baker, carpenter, armorer, knitter, butcher, farmhand, roofer, real estate mogul, and many others—often all before lunchtime each day. A natural teacher, Lucille turned her love of learning into a professional passion, putting herself through enough school and coursework (in both English and French) to graduate with multiple doctorates, if she chose. She took great pride in passing along her knowledge and work ethic to always do things the right way – usually the hard way, by instilling those lessons on anyone that had the potential to even remotely keep up. Lucille’s altruistic spirit shone brightest through her children; her daughter, Anita and her son, Robert “Bobby” Hebert.
Even before moving to Florida, she was familiar with hurricanes. She herself was a one-woman yarn hurricane, flooding local communities, friends, and hospital patients with thousands of cozy sweaters, socks, and hats. Literally taken to the grave with her were the legendary Meme bread and cinnamon roll recipes—so powerful they have never been successfully re-created. Much like her, those recipes inspired thousands to slow down, celebrate, and cherish those around you over the celebration of a meal.
Lucille leaves behind friends and family across Canada, New England, and Florida. In Maine, she is survived by her daughter, Anita Wyman, and her husband, Mark; her three grandsons, their wives, and three great-grandchildren; along with many cherished friends. In Canada, she is survived by six siblings, as well as extended family and friends. In Florida, she is survived by several close friends, including her beloved partner Allan Grigg.
Lucille is now reunited with those who went ahead to save her a seat, including her son, Robert “Bobby” Hebert; First husband Leroy Hebert; Second husband Norman Martineau; and three of her siblings from Canada.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the compassionate staff at Good Shepherd Hospice in Lakeland, Florida, where Lucille received exceptional care and comfort in her final moments.
Friends and family are invited to share their favorite stories, lessons, and “Meme-isms” with the family below.
