Vivian Charlene Derrick (78) of Lexington, SC, went home to be with the Lord on January 20, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was predeceased in life by her parents, Ray and Vivian Derrick of Cayce, brother, Lyn Derrick of Cayce, and an infant brother.
Charlene attended Brookland Cayce High School graduating in 1966 and then USC graduating with a BS degree in early children education followed by a masters in the same discipline.
Charlene taught in several school districts before settling into the Garmany and Pomaria Elementary Schools in the Newberry County school districts where she eventually retired. She was a lifelong resident of Lexington County where she lived until her death.
She loved to read and whenever she purchased a new book would have her beloved mother sign something on the inside cover. She dearly loved her music, dancing, and students, for which she showed great passion for all. She loved teaching and would talk about her students as if they were her own children, with love and respect for all.
Charlene is survived in death by her brother, Bob (Peggy) Derrick of Lexington, a sister, Charlotte (Ed) Kemp of Cayce, and numerous cousins, niece, nephews, as well as several great nephews and nieces.
Celebration of life service will be held on January 27, 2026 at 2:00 pm in the chapel at Thompson Funeral Home, 4720 Augusta Road, Lexington SC with the graveside services immediately following at Woodridge Memorial Park on Corley Mill Road in Lexington. The family will receive friends at 1:00 pm prior to the service.
The family would like to thank her very close and dear friend Susie for her support, love, and generosity for which she greatly appreciated. Also the family would like to thank Jackie, Ron, Your Health Care nurse Stephanie Teague, Lisa Cook, Pastor Kevin, and all others who loved and supported her.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Watershed Church, 711 East Main Street, Lexington SC 29072, or to the charity of choice.
