William “Bill” Hoyt Hine was born January 30, 1927, to Homer B. Hine and Pauline J. (Scott) Hine in Olympia, Washington. He died January 24, 2026, in Olympia, WA.

In 1955, he married Lorraine Ann Bodine who survives him. Together they have six children, Marjorie Ann Bonzer (Steve) of Tacoma, WA, James William Hine (Karen) of San Francisco, CA, Jennifer Louise Hine of Bellingham, WA, Wendy Elizabeth Rawlings (Brian) of Rainier, WA, Paula Jean Patterson (Jay) of Carnation, WA and Emily Sue Hine of Laguna Beach, CA. There are numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, Joyce Koreski of Bellevue, WA.

His early years were spent in Olympia, Tacoma, Seattle and Yakima. He served in the U.S. Navy aircrew during WWII and was honorably discharged as an Aviation Machinists Mate 3/C in 1946. He graduated from Washington State College in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He became registered as a Professional Engineer and Professional Land Surveyor in Washington State and Oregon, and after assignments with consulting firms and Boeing, founded HCE, a Consulting Engineering firm in Tacoma, retiring in 1995.

Some of his fondest early memories include shooting the rapids in Hell’s Canyon, climbing Mt. St. Helens (before the eruption) and winning a giant slalom ski race at White Pass.

He enjoyed fishing, sailing, and gardening – interests he passed on to his family. Bicycling and golfing were favorite activities after his retirement.

After raising the family in Des Moines, WA, Bill and Lorraine moved to Beachcrest in Olympia, WA, where Bill helped organize the emergency preparedness program. He has been active in the Cursillo Movement and other ministries within the Catholic Church. The Capital Bicycling Club awarded him a Lifetime membership for his volunteer work in club activities.

His hope is to be remembered for his love of family, and to have reflected the love of God to all. In Bill’s own words, this Thanksgiving Day Prayer:

It is appropriate to give thanks for many things;

God created us, giving us life. God loves each of us and gives each of us unique talents.

Everything we are, everything we’ve experienced, everything we have; family, friends, good health, faith in God and eternal life God gave me and you.

We pray for the special intentions we hold in our hearts, our families, our friends, those less fortunate who are homeless; in poverty, suffering addiction and violence. We pray for the dead.

And we can give thanks for this food and for those who have helped prepare it.

So, bless us oh Lord and these gifts which we are about to receive from thy bounty through Christ our Lord.

AMEN
