Barbara Ann (Burke) Schanck, 87, of Lexington, SC, went home to her Lord and Savior on January 24, 2026.
She is predeceased by her parents Clinton W Burke and Evelyn (Pope) Burke and recently her dear niece Laurel Bistany Adams.
Barbara leaves behind her most precious treasure, her family, to include: her husband, William Schanck, who was her knight for 70 years, her loving children, of whom she was very proud: Sherry and Randy Rowen of SC, William and Donna Schanck of GA, Michael and Barbara Schanck of NH; her precious grandchildren: Amanda and Greg Hasevlat of NH, Julie Rowen of SC, Devin and Amanda Rowen of SC, Sarah and Joey Boulanger of NH, Megan and Parker McCoy of NC, Jonathan Schanck of GA; and great grandchildren: Sophia Hasevlat and Noah Boulanger of NH; all the family pets that she called her babies. She is also survived by her cherished siblings, Richard and Barbara Burke, David and Charlene Burke, Merri and Steve Keenan and many nieces and nephews.
Barbara Schanck was born on October 16, 1938, in NY, NY. She spent much of her childhood in Salem, NH where she graduated from Woodbury High School in 1956. She married the love of her life in June of 1956 and immediately left NH to support her husband’s military career. They moved all over the States and Canada during their 20 years of service. Barbara was a member of the Officers Wives Club and a great support to others while their husbands were deployed during the Vietnam War.
As a young mother, Barbara surrendered her life to Jesus and from that day on she lived His purpose for her life by spreading The Truth of Salvation. Her Faith and discipleship carried her and others through difficult times.
Barbara was a strong spirit who met life’s challenges with dignity and grace. She was a licensed beautician but a career Homemaker. She took care of her family and managed her household with perfection. She enjoyed hosting family dinners and cooking and baking.
Barbara’s love for reading led her to discover a talent for writing at an early age, especially poetry. She would make up on-the-spot rhymes, poems and little stories for her children’s enjoyment and was encouraged to pursue a certificate from The Institute of Children’s Literature. This program then inspired her to write her own children's book titled Nana Mouse. She loved to spin a story off the top of her head. What a joy to see her eyes sparkle while telling a tale.
Barbara served her community in several ministries through her church over the years. She sang in the Choir, made weekly visits to the infirmed and elderly, and served food at the men’s shelter.
Her love of music was an important part of her daily routine. She learned to play piano, and her home always had music playing. She said, “music fuels the soul”.
Barbara Schanck exuded love and joy in this world, so surly she heard, “Come into the place I have prepared for you.” “Well done, my good and faithful servant”.
Services will be scheduled at Fort Jackson Cemetery in the near future.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital, in memory of Barbara Schanck.
