It is with heavy hearts and much sadness that we announce the passing of Debra L. Slate.  Beloved Mom, cherished sister-cousin-friend.  Deb left this earthly life with family by her side on January 24, 2026 after a hard fought battle.  Brought up in Chicopee, she was the daughter of Roland (Buddy) and Lillian (LaPine) Slate.  Deb built a life in Belchertown for herself and The Light of Her Life and Best Friend, her son J.C.  Deb earned an Associates Degree in Business from STCC and fulfilling a lifelong passion of service to others, worked for over 50 years with special needs mentally challenged clients in a variety of settings.

Deb will be remembered as a loving mother and cherished friend to many, whose heartfelt presence and kindness enriched the lives of those around her.  Deb will be greatly missed by her loving son, J.C.-James Snodgrass, Gunner, her faithful dog and Lily, her cat, all with whom she lived along with her sister, Cynthia Ulmer of Port St. Lucie, FL, many cherished cousins and friends, two of whom she called her "daughter", Casey Gamache and her "second son", Greg Ely.

Deb had a very special crafting talent admired by all, creating many beautiful handmade items even doing so from her hospital bed.  Deb's happy place and solace when away from home was spending time at Queen Lake with the "Gal Pals", Robin, Barb and Paula or taking in the sights and sounds at the  ocean.  Those who knew Deb recognized what an amazing woman she was.  A quiet presence yet a staunch advocate for all the special people that brought so much joy to her life including a huge love of animals.

Rest in peace now our dear friend.  We love you!  A celebration of life service will be held at a later date in the spring.  In lieu of flowers and fulfilling Deb's love for animals, donations can be made to the Belchertown Police Department K-9 Unit.
