David Edward Hart, age 94, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026. David was born on November 22, 1931, in Farmville, Virginia, the fourth of five children born to Freeman and Jean Hart. His childhood was filled with many fond memories, spent in Hampton-Sydney, Atlanta, and Gainesville. During this time, he enjoyed summers on his Uncle Walter’s farm in Virginia, an experience that instilled a strong work ethic and appreciation for family traditions.
Two days after graduating from high school, David joined the United States Air Force and proudly served his country in the Korean War. Following his military service, David attended Erskine College and cherished his time there. On April 24, 1960, David married the love of his life, Rachel Bean Hart. He truly loved and adored his beautiful bride. They met at the young adult group at Dilworth United Methodist church, and she captured his heart on their first date. Together, they raised two children and later found great joy in being actively involved in the lives of their five grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
David spent his career in sales, beginning at J.C. Penney. He went on to build a highly successful career in the office supply industry, working as a sales and manufacturer’s representative for BIC, Pentel, and Pilot Pens. When David began, each company had only a limited presence in the Carolinas, but he grew their business to millions of dollars by the time he retired. Over the course of his career, David earned multiple sales awards, reflecting both his professional excellence and the trust he built with customers.
His faith was a cornerstone of David’s life. He was active in his church, serving as a fourth-grade Sunday School teacher and usher. He thoroughly enjoyed participating in Bible study groups, where his thoughtful insights, steady presence, and sincere faith were deeply valued.
David especially enjoyed family gatherings. Known for his many questions, he enjoyed learning about his loved ones' lives and was known for remembering the details they shared. He will be remembered for his genuine interest in others and the way he made people feel seen and valued. His positive outlook was reflected in his typical response to questions about himself: “I’m far better than I deserve.”
Left to cherish his memory are his two children, son Walter Hart and wife Laura, and daughter Susan Hart Leonard and husband David; his grandchildren, Tyler Hart and wife Tiffany, Patrick Hart and wife Miranda, Sarah Leonard, Katie Leonard, and Savannah Hart; and his great-granddaughter, Lily Hart. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Jean Blanding Dickey, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family extends special thanks to Via Hospice, the caring staff at The Landings of Cabarrus, and, in particular, to his caregiver, Anita Macy, whose kindness was evident in the excellent care she provided to David every day.
A visitation will be held Saturday, February 7, 2026, from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m., with a service to celebrate David’s life immediately following at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Tribute and Tallent Funeral Home, 1937 N. Sharon Amity Road, Charlotte, NC 28205. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sardis Presbyterian Church (6100 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC 28270).
