It is with sorrow that we announce the passing of Barbara Jean (Hinton) Black, age 80, on January 17, 2026. She was a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and friend, and she will be dearly missed. Barbara was a graduate of Austin High School and UTEP, and lived most of her life in El Paso and Colorado Springs, CO.
Barbara was spirited – full of life, compassionate, and strong-willed. Beginning her married life as a soldier’s wife, she became a mother, receptionist at her dad’s medical office, and teacher, often as a substitute at St. Clements. She began her real estate career later in life to help support her family, quickly and often achieving the “million-dollar” milestone. Throughout her life, she was an active member & volunteer in the El Paso community, including with the Junior League of El Paso, Kermézar, the Art Museum of El Paso and the Sun Carnival. She also was a proud Daughter of the American Revolution.
Barbara’s friends and family fondly remember her love of playing tennis, cooking and shopping for a deal. She cherished spending time with loved ones, especially if a party with dancing was involved. Barbara was quite an artist with beautiful calligraphy skills, which grew into painting later in life. She had an acute sense of fairness, especially when her family was involved, often fighting for all of us. Barbara was quick to offer her insightful opinions and wasn’t afraid of anyone, including once, even reprimanding Leslie Nielson for tormenting guests of the Sun Carnival charity golf tournament with a ‘fart box’ he had made. She also had a soft spot for lost dogs, often surprising us by bringing home dogs she had saved off the streets.
Barbara was always very faithful and close to God. She loved her Bible Study group and was a strong spiritual example to her family.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Joseph Houston Hinton and Gwendolyn Moody Hinton and her sisters, Phyllis Anne Pollard, Zella Sally Hinton and Linda Faye Allen. Barbara is survived by her husband of 60 years, Winston Lee Black, Jr., her children Susan Kay Gotaas, Winston Lee Black, III (Michelle) and John Davis Hinton Black (Jessica), and her 10 grandchildren, Lynlee Paige Apsey (James), Gillian Grace Gotaas, Winston Lee Black, IV, William Lee Black, Wesley Lee Black, Walker Lee Black, Bonnie Jean Black, Sebastian Daniel Black, Emily Louise Black and Patrick Davis Black. She is also survived by
her siblings Gwendolyn Nolan (Steve) and Joseph Hinton, Jr. (Cindy) and many extended family & friends. They all cherish and honor her memory.
While Barbara wasn’t quite ready to go Home, as she told her family, when it’s time and God calls, there isn’t a better place to be.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, January 30, 2026, at the Church of St. Clement. In lieu of flowers, we invite you to make a donation in her honor to the Church of St. Clement, 810 N. Campbell, El Paso, Texas 79902 or the charitable organization of your choice.
