Floyd was born on January 9, 1931, in Pueblo, Colorado, to his Mother Bertha. Before Floyd ever took his first breath, his life was already shaped by loss. His Father Passed away while Bertha was still pregnant leaving her to face the world with Floyd & his older Brother Clifford. Floyd did not let hardship define him in life, instead he allowed it to shape him in strength & perseverance.
Floyd met his wife, Wanda Wood in high school. They were married on March 16, 1950 & were married for 75 years. On February 28, 1951, they welcomed their only child, Darrel. Becoming a husband & a father was not just a role for Floyd. When Darrel was just a toddler, Floyd & his wife opened up their home to 3 other children, Diane, Richard & Shirley Underwood. And in a way that only families can, those shared childhood days created a bond that time can never erase. All these years later Darrel does not speak of Richard as a cousin but as a brother & Floyd thought of him as a son.
Floyd was above all else, a hard worker. Work was not just how he earned a living it also reflected who he was. He began his career at Kaiser Steel in Fontana, CA where he completed his apprenticeship as a machinist. From there he went to work at carious machine shops. Finally, Floyd went to work for Southern CA Eison, where he worked steam & hydro electrical generation maintenance for 20 years before retiring.
Floyd had a deep faith & commitment to God. His faith was demonstrated in his steady devotion to Jesus & the many churches they attended. Floyd often worked quietly behind the scenes building props & sets for Wanda’s elaborate Christmas plays, puppet shows, Sunday School Projects & more. For Floyd faith was not about being seen but about being useful in Gods hands.
If there was one thing everyone knew about Floyd, it was this; If it’s broken, he could fix it. Floyd had a gift for understanding how things were put together. One of his favorite hobbies was guns. He was a skilled Gunsmith, he enjoyed modifying, repairing & collecting firearms. He was also a good mechanic & enjoyed bringing old things back to life. In his workshop, surrounded by tools & parts, Floyd was in his element.
Floyd was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda. He survived by his son, Darrel & his wife Sue Ferguson-Underwood. He is also survived by Richard, who, as we shared, held a special place in this family-not as a cousin but as a brother. Floyd is also survived by 4 Grandchildren, Matthew, Jonathan, Joe Underwood & Keri Dowell & 4 Great Grandchildren.
