With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of Betty Muth Johnson (aka Elizabeth May Murph Muth Johnson), a remarkable woman whose good humor, strength, and graciousness touched everyone she met. She passed away peacefully on November 11, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and grace.
Betty was born on September 18, 1931, in Greensboro, North Carolina. As a young child she moved to Baltimore, Maryland where she met her future husband of 36 years, Paul Gilbert Muth. Together they had 8 children and a full life of swim team, little league, ballet lessons, and many great years of watching their children grow. They moved the family across the country to Vallejo, CA in 1966.
Betty worked for the City of Vallejo in the Finance Department from 1968 to 1988. In addition to working full time and raising 8 children, Betty was an accomplished seamstress, making many prom dresses for her 4 daughters, as well as an avid knitter and crocheter. Many of her afghans are still providing warmth and comfort.
Later in life Betty met and married Edwin Johnson, a gentle man and incredibly kind soul with whom she spent 8 happy years in Benicia, California.
Her life was a testament to love in action. Whether she was tending her garden and many African violets and other indoor plants, volunteering in the community, playing bridge, leading a Girl Scout troop, or engaging in one of her greatest passions, going to garage sales on Saturdays with friends, she gave of herself freely and without hesitation. Her wisdom was quiet but profound, her love of the trees and the blue sky was everlasting, and she always gave her love unconditionally.
She is survived by her children Bet Muth, Marie Piazza, Paul Muth (Carol), Theresa Muth (Maggie Redmon), Barb Aguirre, and Dave Muth (Laura); 7 grandchildren Amber, Anya, Sarah, Miranda, Andrew, Ashley, and David; and 3 great grandchildren all of whom who will carry her memory in their hearts forever. Her loving sons Joe Muth and Buck Muth preceded her in death.
Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit will continue to guide us — in the way we love, the way we forgive, and the way we find beauty in nature and the everyday moments.
We will miss you mom, grandma, Gma, GG, Betty. Rest peacefully. You’ve earned it!
There will be a celebration of Betty’s life on February 27 in Benicia. Please contact a family member if you are interested in attending.
