Albert Derrell Bennett, III (aka “Sweet Derrell”) (aka “Grumps”) entered into eternal rest on January 27, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Columbia, S.C. on May 20, 1952, son of the late Albert Derrell Bennett, Jr. and Frances Marian Salley Bennett. Derrell graduated from A.C. Flora High School and attended Gardner Webb College and Midlands Technical College, graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering. He retired as President and owner of Allcraft Steel Co., Inc., a family business started by his father.
Derrell was the beloved husband of Cheryl Ann Bennett “Cherrie” for the past 49 years. Their marriage was a lifelong love story marked by devotion, laughter, and unwavering partnership.
He was a proud father to his son, Albert Derrell “Dee” Bennett, IV of Lexington, and his daughter Ashley Lauren Bennett Johnson (Corbin) of West Columbia. Derrell was a devoted and playful “Grumps” to Bennett Miller Johnson and Marshall Weller Johnson, who brought him endless joy and pride. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Teresa Bennett Proctor (Jim) of Rock Hill, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews with whom he shared a special lifetime bond.
Derrell worked as a civil engineer specializing in structural steel. He took great pride in building things meant to last – just as he did with his family and friendships.
Affectionately self-appointed and known as “Sweet Derrell”, he was truly one of a kind. An instigator in the very best sense, he had a gift for stirring the pot just enough to make life more interesting, usually with a grin, that twinkle in his eye, and a perfectly timed comment. He never met a stranger, rarely missed an opportunity for humor, and left behind a trail of smiles wherever he went.
Derrell’s legacy lives on in the family he adored, the friendships he nurtured, and the countless stories that will continue to be told – often with laughter, sometimes with eye-rolls, and always with love. He will be deeply missed, joyfully remembered and forever cherished.
The family would like to acknowledge the excellent treatment and care throughout this past year provided by the SC Oncology Center, Baptist Medical Center, and Three Oaks Hospice of Lexington.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Thompson’s Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Rd. Columbia, SC. Plans include visitation with the family on Sauturday, February 7, 2026, at 12:00 pm with a memorial service in their chapel following at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park directly across the street.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
