Charles Michael Hanns , son to James E. Hanns and Patricia Ann Bellmer Hanns, passed away January 23, 2026. “Mike” was born in Salem Oregon and attended South Salem High School, where he developed a lifelong passion and pursuit of the double bass. He graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in music, then spent the rest of his life in Eugene. He was very active in the jazz community, playing numerous gigs locally as well as statewide. He was also a real estate broker and started Realty Pacific NW, where he spent some 30 years helping Eugene families land their dream homes. Like a Duke Ellington piece missing 4-5 measures in the middle, Mike too will be missed.
He played life joyfully and loved unconditionally.
Like jazz, his life was never about perfection, but about feeling; about holding down the low end and allowing all you, his angels, to soar. Although his bass is silent now, his strong, playful rhythm remains. And for all who knew and loved him . . . he loved you more.
