Mary Ellen Brant Whaples, 87, passed peacefully into eternity on January 30, 2026, surrounded by the love of the family she so deeply cherished.

Born on May 22, 1938, in Sylvania, Georgia, Mary lived a life defined by devotion, kindness, and unwavering love for those around her. Known affectionately as “Sweet Mary” by some and simply Mom or Grammy by many, she was truly a friend to all.

Mary was the beloved wife of Randolph Whaples and was “Dad’s favorite,” her husband of 71 years and, as he fondly said, “My Bride.” Together they shared a lifetime of partnership, laughter, sacrifice, and enduring love. She married a military man and faithfully supported him, eventually settling in Enfield, Connecticut, where they raised their family. For the past 24 years, Mary made her home in Melbourne, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her son, James Randall Whaples, and her son-in-law, Ernie Douville.

Mary leaves behind her devoted husband, Randolph Whaples; her three daughters, Wanda Lewandoski (Jack Lewandoski), Debi Luczai (Gary Luczai), and Carol Douville; four granddaughters, Shannon Elaine Douville Whitbeck (Tim Whitbeck), Amanda Mary Douville Pelkey (Craig Pelkey), Kelly Jean Samsel Letts (Rick Letts), and Lindsey Ann Samsel Walsh (Mike Walsh); step-grandson, Nick Lewandoski (Melissa), and his daughter Nina; step great-granddaughters, Ella Letts and Mya Letts; and her eight great-grandchildren, Noah James Whitbeck (Ferni), Joy Elizabeth Whitbeck, Emma Grace Whitbeck, Cayla Ruth Whitbeck, Elijah David Pelkey (Payton), Spencer Randall Pelkey, Joelyn Hazel Pelkey, and Colin Michael Walsh. Mary was further blessed with two great-great-grandchildren, Leonardo Mateo Whitbeck and Miguel Angel Whitbeck.

A Celebration of Mary’s life will take place at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 9th, 2026 at Ammen Family Cremation and Funeral Care- Melbourne Chapel, 1001 S. Hickory Street, Melbourne, FL 32901. The family will greet friends at the funeral home after the service.

Mary’s life was one of quiet strength, generosity, and boundless love. She welcomed everyone with warmth, offered friendship freely, and gave selflessly to her family. Her home and heart were always open, and her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Though she has passed from this life, Mary’s love, laughter, and legacy live on in the many lives she touched.
