**Obituary for Velda Mae Walters (Conger)** It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Velda Mae Walters, who departed this life on February 1, 2026, in Westminster, Colorado, at the age of 80. Born on July 8, 1945, in Loup City, Nebraska, Velda was a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend who touched the lives of many through her kindness and unwavering support.
Velda dedicated an impressive 39 years to Loretto Heights College and Colorado Christian University, where she became a beloved figure in the cafeteria, nurturing not only the appetites but also the aspirations of countless students. Her impact extended far beyond her role; she was a supporter of their dreams and a passionate advocate for their athletic achievements. This legacy of encouragement and friendship continues to resonate around the globe, as she maintained close connections with her former coworkers and students.
Velda was a person of many admirable traits—kind, energetic, honest, loyal, funny, and generous. Her spirit shone brightly in every aspect of her life, whether it was on the sidelines of a sporting event for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren or dancing to the tunes of her beloved oldies from the '50s and '60s. She was an avid supporter of both the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the basketball teams at her universities. Her joyful heart found peace in the simple pleasures of life, such as attending church and spending time with her cherished church family, and creating lasting memories at the beach, where she loved to feel the sand beneath her toes.
Velda was a devoted mother to her three daughters, Amy Gallegos, Brenda Pfister, and Cherie Werkhoven, and a beloved mother-in-law to David Pfister and Tim Werkhoven. Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren: Julius Gallegos (Reese), Michael Gallegos (Carli), Shealyn Gallegos (Tyler,) Patricia Rose (Nick), Danniale Pfister, Justin Pfister, Amanda Glasco, Alyssa Dykman (Kory) and Jaden Werkhoven, as well as her great-grandchildren: Jazlyn, Kai, Aubrielle, Colton, Paul, Lily, Lennex, Lexington, Loxett, Bricelyn, Blakely, Bartholomew and Beaux. She was preceded in death by the love of her life and husband of 58 years Frank and her beloved grandchildren, Jennifer, Amber, and Bobby Ray, whose memories she will carry forever.
A celebration of Velda's life will be held on February 14, 2026, at Green Mountain United Methodist Church, located at 12755 W Cedar Dr, Lakewood, CO 80228, at 11:00 AM, with a lunch and refreshments to follow at 12:00 PM. As we remember Velda Mae Walters, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by love, dedication, and kindness. Her memory will forever be cherished by her family and friends, as they reflect on the countless moments spent together, the lessons she imparted, and the love she shared.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that condolences be expressed through forgiveness and acts of kindness to others, honoring Velda’s legacy of generosity and love. She may have departed from this world, but her spirit will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
