John Edward McKnire, born October 31, 1946, in Lewistown, Montana, departed this life February 1, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and craftsmanship. He was the son of Mary (Barisich) and Vester McKnire and grew up alongside his siblings—older brothers Dennis and Russell (deceased), and younger sister Arlene.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Claudia, whose partnership and devotion were the foundation of their family. He was a dedicated father to 3 beautiful daughters. His 2 younger daughters, Susan Stegman and her family, Dan, Alea, and Lexy; and Saundra Quintana with her family, Mike, Isabella, and Lucia, all reside in Colorado Springs. Oldest, Cheryl (b. 1968), preceded him in death in 1973 at a young age after a courageous battle with leukemia. We are all positive she was anxiously waiting to welcome her Dad into God’s Kingdom.
Proud of his service to his country, John served as an Army Drill Sergeant at Fort Polk, Louisiana, from 1965 to 1968. After his military service, he returned to Billings, Montana, working at Pierce Packing Plant before relocating to Colorado, where he became the Chief Maintenance Engineer at Sinton Dairy, departing the position in 2002. Never slowing down, John continued doing what he loved by joining the engineering team at Parkview Hospital in Pueblo, retiring in 2011.
From a young age, John discovered a passion for cars. Specifically, the classic muscle cars of his youth. This love became a lifelong pursuit, restoring and showing cars through the Rocky Mountain Mustangers and Stockers car clubs. He was most proud of his full restoration of a 1970 Mustang Boss 302 in Grabber Green. Whether participating in Poker Runs, heading to the racetrack, or simply enjoying the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts, John found joy in every engine rev and every moment spent with friends.
A man of integrity, humor, and boundless curiosity, John lived a life full of purpose and heart. His laughter, his steady presence, and his ability to find a logical resolution to almost any situation he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A life well lived, and a man deeply loved—John’s memory will remain forever in the hearts of his family and friends.
Rosary service will be held on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at 10:15 AM, with a funeral mass at 11:00 AM and luncheon to follow at Holy Apostles Catholic Church, 4925 N. Carefree Cir. Colorado Springs, CO 80917.
A military committal service to follow at 2:00 PM at Pikes Peak National Cemetery, 10545 Drennan Rd. Colorado Springs, CO 80925.
