Charles Alonzo Atkins Jr., age 94, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026. He was born on December 10, 1931, in Memphis, Tennessee, and spent more than 55 years making Orlando, Florida his home.
Charles served his country honorably in the United States Coast Guard before embarking on a lifelong career in the paper industry, proudly following in the footsteps of his father, Charles Atkins Sr. Through dedication, integrity, and hard work, he became a respected paper salesman and industry leader, eventually owning and operating Atkins Paper. His professionalism, leadership, and fairness earned him lasting respect among colleagues, customers, and peers.
Raised in Jacksonville, Florida, Charles attended Bolles Academy and later earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida. He carried his education, discipline, and work ethic with him throughout his life.
Charles was known and loved for his loud, infectious laugh and his ability to tell unforgettable stories. He had a natural gift for connection and never met a stranger. Deeply committed to giving back, he volunteered extensively throughout his life, serving in leadership and support roles with homeowner association boards, Toastmasters, professional and industry organizations, and through civic service at the city and county level, including grand jury service. He took great pride in being involved, engaged, and useful to his community, and was honored for his service.
An active man well into later life, Charles found joy in being outdoors and on the move. He was a prolific golfer and bowler, as well as an avid water skier and swimmer, pursuits that reflected his competitive spirit, energy, and love of life.
In his later years, Charles resided at Alura Senior Living, where he formed meaningful friendships and was cared for with respect, dignity, and compassion. His family is deeply grateful for the kindness and care he received there.
Charles is survived by his son, Frederick Lon Ricketts, Lon’s wife Sarah, and their children; by Mary Kay Davies and her husband Albert Davies, and their children; and by his brother, William Atkins. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, friends, and members of the community whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
Charles will be remembered for his warmth, humor, generosity, and steadfast commitment to family, friends, and community. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, service, laughter, and stories that will be told for years to come.
