Edward William McCann went home on February 5, 2026 after a 6 year struggle with Parkinson's disease.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife Cathey Scott McCann, his father Frank Moses McCann and his sister Nancy Langhorne McCann. He is survived by his mother Nancy C. Harlow, his siblings Susan Collins Adams, Michael McCann and wife Phyllis, James McCann and wife Mary, Jonathan , Steven and Zita McCann and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition Ed has left behind a lifetime close friend of nearly 55 years Kenneth L. Harris.
Ed was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on May 25, 1958 the fifth of 8 children. He graduated from E.C. Glass High School. He went to work in carpentry ; mainly house framing but also did some masonry and drywall hanging.
He became a believer in Jesus Christ and served the Lord in his church and was an active volunteer in the Young Life Ministry where he shared his faith with many young high school students. Ed began practicing what was often referred to as "friendship evangelism". Ed was a member of Cornerstone Community Church.
In addition to these activities Ed was also actively engaged with local theatre, doing set construction and lighting. He also landed a few acting roles and even performed some ballet. In addition he served as the Rivermont Avenue traffic coordinator for the Virginia Ten Miler for a good number of years.
Later Ed began attending classes at CVCC and went on to earn a degree in biology at UVA. While at UVA Ed volunteered with the Charlottesville/ Albemarle Rescue Squad (CARS). During this time he met his beloved Cathey, a trauma nurse at UVA Hospital and they were married for almost 17 years before she passed away in 2021. Cathey encouraged Ed to pursue a nursing career which led to him obtaining a Diploma in Nursing from LGH School of Nursing . After graduation he went to work at Virginia Baptist Hospital where he worked until an early retirement in 2023.
Ed and Cathey loved travelling to Caribbean locales usually by cruise lines. Together they bought a home in the Tye River community and cared for their four legged canine "children" : Phoenix, Luke & Stella. After Cathey died Ed adopted a feline child whom he named Pushka. In the years since Cathey passed Ed has enjoyed the support of his very long term friends Mandy W Hoffmeister and husband John, Cynthia Taylor and Christopher Miles. The Family would like to thank the Care staff at Lynchburg General and Virginia Baptist Hospitals and especially the Care team at Greenview Manor and Centra Hospice for their round the clock care provided to Eddie in his final days with us here.
