With great sadness, we announce the passing of Eugene “Gene” Heckman. Gene passed away January 30, 2026 in Portland, Oregon following an unexpected medical event.   

He was born on September 26, 1958 in Friend, Nebraska to Eugene Heckman Sr. and Carol Heckman. Moving to Fairview, Oregon as a young child, he grew up and remained in the Portland, Oregon area. He was a self-employed general contractor for the entirety of his career and built many homes in the greater Portland metro area over the years. On nearly any outing in various parts of town, he’d proudly point out homes that he built.   

After he was forced to quit doing the work he loved following an accident, he resided with his brother Ken and sister-in-law Sasha in NE Portland. He enjoyed spending his days drinking coffee, watching football or car races with his brother Ken, spending time with his loved ones, and tracking his step goal everyday on his fitbit. He enjoyed walking and knew it was good for his health and longevity, most days racking up 25,000 plus steps. He was somewhat of a neighborhood celebrity when his walking took him outdoors and always got a kick out of people recognizing him and praising his dedication.   

He was preceded in death by both of his parents. He is survived by his daughter Jenni Rusow (husband Nick); siblings Ken Heckman (wife Sasha); Steve Heckman (wife Michele); Carla Heckman; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.    Gene will be fondly remembered by all of us who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him. His spirit will live on in the stories told, the laughter shared and the memories held close by all who knew him.   

A small celebration of life will be held at a later date.
