Albert Carl Ames "Pop", 76, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2026, at the hospice house in Greenwood, South Carolina, after a brave battle with cancer.
Born on February 5, 1950, in Casa Grande, Arizona, he lived a life marked by dedication to his family and a remarkable talent for fixing just about anything. Pop was truly a servant of God and always blessed anyone he crossed paths with.
Albert was known affectionately as “Pop” by those closest to him—a fitting nickname for a man whose warmth and humor made him the heart of his family. He had a great ability to bring people together with his laughter and love. Whether it was through his skilled hands as a welder or his role as the go-to “Mr. Fix It All,” Pop was always ready to lend a hand or share a joke. A man of many talents and deep devotion to those he loved, he cherished time spent with family—whether gathered around the table or tinkering in the garage. His immense love for his pups was undeniable. Pinky, Zoey, Nova, and Maya had a special place in Pop's home and heart.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Anna Ames of 58 years; his children, Michael Ames (Jenny), Patricia Matthews (Angel), and Chelsea Heinz (Brandon); his beloved grandchildren, Brooklyn Pleis, Braxton Heinz, Samantha Larkin, and Zachary Ames. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Xander, Jay'ceon, Sammuel, Cadience, Elena, Zenith, Wesley, Molly, and Carley. He leaves behind his sister, Wanda Donaldson (Curtis) and brother, Raymond Ames (Lynn). Pop also leaves behind his very special friends, John Barton and Andre Ledford, as well as many nieces and nephews and other family that brought him great joy within his life. Albert was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Johnnie Ames and his brother, Johnny Ames.
A Celebration of Pop's Life will be held at a later date.
The family would like to send a special thank you to Hospice and Palliative Care of the Piedmont for taking such great care of Pop and his family during this difficult time, and a special thank you to his nurse Kim.
May Pop’s memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved him.
