George William McGee finished his long journey on Thursday, January 8 2026 in Albuquerque, NM.George was born in Dover, Arkansas on August 21, 1926. He was the youngest of five children born to George and Bertha (Dickens) McGee. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Lewis and Haney, sisters Lena (Hale) and Louise (Presley), two sons Thomas D McGee and George Ed McGee and his wife of 54 years, Patsy McGee.George will long be remembered for his kindness and wit, along with his western shirts and bolo ties. A voracious reader, he was known to read a book several times over, often leaving a note to himself of when he finished it. He liked to say that he could come back to a book a few months later and it's like a whole new book again. His family moved to California during World War II, where he finished high school and worked at the Consolidated plant in San Diego, building B-24s, before joining the US Army. He liked to joke that he was in the final Cavalry group to actually train with horses, attending Horseshoeing school in Ft Riley, KS. George ended the war in the Philippines and stayed there for almost a year, where he bought his prized hand-made fiddle in Manilla. George began playing the fiddle at 13 years old and was known to play at church dances and community get-togethers. He continued to play for his long life and achieved the title of New Mexico Champion fiddler at 74. He loved to play for friends and family  all the way to the end of his days.  He began driving a bus for Greyhound in 1952 and spent 37 years hauling people and freight into and out of Albuquerque. He was most proud of achieving a safety award for 3,100,000 miles of good driving. All those years of being on a tight schedule with Greyhound made him very time conscious and one never saw him without one of his favorite watches on his arm always kept meticulously to Standard time.George will be dearly missed by friends in Albuquerque and family back home and from across the country. We will be celebrating his life on Saturday, February 21 at 1:00 pm, at Rushing Cemetery in Dover, Arkansas.
