Robert Owen Anderson, aged 88, passed away from natural causes on February 3rd, 2026, in Meridian. Graveside memorial services accompanied by full military honors are scheduled for February 27, 2026, at Hillcrest cemetery in Weiser at 1:00. 

Born on April 19, 1937, in a maternity home in Council, Idaho, Robert was the son of Faridon James Anderson and Alvena Hauser Anderson. He was named Robert after one of his father’s students who shared his birthday and Owen in honor of his beloved uncle. As the eldest sibling, he had four younger siblings: Julia, Nancy, Jerry, and Mary. 

In 1941, Robert’s family relocated to Cambridge, ID then to Vancouver, WA and settled in Weiser, Idaho. He joined the Idaho National Guard in high school. After graduating in 1956 he continued his service with company C of the 116th Armed Cavalry, Armor Division. In December 1966 he reported to Fort Campbell, Kentucky for training. In 1968 he served in Vietnam where he received his first military commendation, the Combat Infantry Badge. Over the course of his distinguished military career, he was awarded the National Defense Service medal and the Republic of Vietnam Service medal, among others. The Republic of Vietnam awarded him the Cross off Gallantry. 

Throughout his life Robert was known for his kindness, intelligence, his calm nature, and willingness to help others. As a father he was loving and supportive. As a boss he was a leader and mentor. As a soldier he was a credit to the United States military. 

Robert was a recognized expert in recruiting and retention strategies. During his last posting as Chief, Strength Management 6th Army, he established the foundation for the proactive Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) program which assists employers in retaining positions for soldiers returning from active duty. After retirement Robert and his life partner, Christine Schafer, dedicated many years to the ESGR program, successfully engaging businesses to participate. Notably, while representing the ESGR, he successfully completed an arrested landing and a catapult takeoff aboard the USS Ronald Reagan in 2009 and was honored as an Honorary Naval Aviator. Robert loved this work. 

Robert is survived by his daughters Brenda Anderson, Terrie Cheung, Melinda Sue Greene, Melanie Anderson, and his grandchildren Kathryn Greene and Nathan Cheung, his sister Nancy Ann Southam, and his brother James Jerry Anderson. He spent his final years in Meridian, alongside his love Rosetta Orsatti. He was preceded in death by his wife Jeannette Kautz, his longtime partner Christine Schafer, two sisters Julia “Judy” Jeanine Goates and Mary Ellen Bair, and his beloved cat, Beanie. In lieu of flowers please support the USO.
