Claude Michel Pels, 78, of Syracuse, NY, passed away with his loving family at his bedside on January 29th, 2026 after a brief illness.   He was the son of Michel and Catherine Augustyn Pels. Claude was born in Paris, France on February 2, 1947. He and his family immigrated to Syracuse in 1959.   After graduating from Syracuse University, Claude spent two years active duty as a Lieutenant in the US Army at Ft. Benning, GA. and Ft. Campbell, KY.   Claude was a supervising senior caseworker for the Onondaga County Department of Social Services, Children's Division, where he made numerous friends and colleagues who worked with him through many difficult and troubling cases. He retired in 2001 after 32 years of service.   During his life, he enjoyed sports, drawing, painting, reading and traveling with his family. After retiring, he and Audrey would spend many vacations in Nevada.   

Claude leaves behind Audrey, his loving wife of 57 years, A son and daughter in law, David and Elizabeth, as well as two granddaughters, Claudia Rose and Lisa Nicole, great grand children, Alexis, Jared, Tyler and Jaden along with several nieces and nephews.   

He was predeceased by his parents, Michel and Catherine, his siblings, Wanda, John and Daniel, also his grandson, David Jeffrey.  

Those who knew him would best describe him as a man of honor, integrity and especially one of uncompromising camaraderie and humor.   Most important, Claude was the best husband, father, grandfather, colleague and friend that anyone could ever ask for.

He will be deeply missed by all.  

Services and a spring burial will be held at a date to be announced.
