Andrew Ruman, 87, of Summerville, South Carolina, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, February 11, 2026.Born in Bačka Palanka, Yugoslavia (now Serbia), Andrew immigrated to the United States in 1953 at the age of fifteen. He served in the United States Army in Korea and at the United Nations in New York before building a distinguished career in international banking and trade. A recognized expert in International Trade and Banking, Andrew served on the U.S. Export Council and was cited in several published works on the subject. He approached his work the way he approached life — with curiosity and quiet expertise.Andrew and his wife Jane began their journey together in Akron, Ohio; and over the years made their home in Cleveland, Ohio; Toledo, Ohio; Mequon, Wisconsin; and Southport, North Carolina before settling in Summerville, South Carolina. Soccer was a major part of Andrew’s life, Andrew started playing as a young boy, shoeless in Europe, playing for the University of Akron, and later becoming a fan of any soccer he could find on television. Wherever they lived, Andrew could be found on the golf course or tennis court, or behind a camera lens — always noticing, always curious. Those who knew Andrew remember a man who was smart and funny in equal measure, who would generously share his knowledge when asked but never sought the spotlight. He was reserved by nature, but everyone who met him liked him. Friends recall that Andrew was always forward-looking — he appreciated the past and could talk about it, but his mind was always on tomorrow. That was just who he was.Andrew was preceded in death by his parents, Suzanna and Andrew Ruman. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Jane; his sons, Jonathan (Jodi) and Michael (Sarah); his grandchildren, Sadie, Zachary, and Benjamin; and two four-legged grandchildren, Ethel and Ernie, who held a special place in his heart; and his brother Ronald (Carol).
Andrew leaves behind many family and friends, all over the world.
