James J. DiGiorno Sr. (Jim) died on February 10 at 92, after a brief period of declining health. Throughout his life, family was the most important thing to Jim. He is survived by his loving daughter, Lisa McNamara, and son-in-law Glenn McNamara, with whom he lived; his son, James DiGiorno Jr., of whom he was incredibly proud; his dear sister Mary Ann McMahon; cherished grandchildren Brittney McNamara (Theo Roussi) and Joe DiGiorno; his “favorite niece,” Cindy Therrien; and his great-nieces, and one great-grandchild. Jim was predeceased by his nephews Jack and Wayne McMahon.

Jim was born in Worcester, raised alongside his beloved “younger” sister, Mary Ann. After losing their mother, Susan Tomasino DiGiorno, at age 8, Jim and Mary Ann were raised by their father, Joseph DiGiorno. Jim often shared memories from his youth and conveyed deep gratitude for the support—and sacrifice—of his extended family. Jim was a graduate of Worcester Academy, and of the University of Connecticut (‘57). He was also a lifelong fan of the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team.

Jim was a veteran of the United States Army before starting a successful career as director of training for Friendly Ice Cream Corp. Later, he became a restaurant owner, including the Jim Dandy Fried Chicken chain and Heidi’s Restaurant in South Hadley. As a result of his business savvy, Jim retired early and enjoyed the latter half of his life split between Jupiter, Florida and Amherst, Massachusetts. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing with the Pine Tree Gang from the Orchards Golf Course in South Hadley.

Jim was proud of his family, showing up at every sporting event, concert, recital, graduation, and beyond. His presence and guidance were always felt by his family, particularly in the smaller moments: the many lunches he shared with his daughter, and the trips with his son; many games of checkers with his granddaughter, and dancing to his grandson’s trumpet solos. His family will miss his presence in their lives.

A private service for Jim’s family will be held at a later date.
