Philip Ray Maynard, 73, of Satellite Beach passed from this world into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, February 16, 2026.
Phil was born on June 6, 1952, in St. Louis, to Donald Dee Maynard and Eunice Kathleen Hanbaum. During his childhood, he traveled extensively around the world while his father served in the United States Air Force. Eventually, the family settled in Satellite Beach, Florida, where Phil graduated from Satellite High School alongside his high school sweetheart, Becky Parker. The two were married a year later, beginning a devoted partnership that would span a lifetime.
Soon after marrying, Phil enlisted in the United States Army and served three years in Texas and California, attaining the rank of Specialist Five (SP5). During these early years, Phil and Becky welcomed their daughter, Amanda Melanie, in 1975, and their son, Joshua Adam, in 1980.
Phil pursued higher education at University of Central Florida, graduating in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Answering a deeper call to ministry, he continued his theological education at Duke University, earning a Master of Divinity degree in 1989 and a Master of Theology degree in 1991. While at Duke, he served as a student pastor at Chestnut Ridge United Methodist Church. In 1988, he was ordained a Deacon in the United Methodist Church, and in 1993 he was ordained an Elder. He later earned his Doctor of Ministry degree in 1995 from Drew University.
Phil and his family faithfully served several congregations throughout Florida. He pastored Chestnut Ridge United Methodist Church from June 1986 to June 1991; First United Methodist Church of Stuart from June 1991 to August 1993; First United Methodist Church of Lake Alfred from September 1993 to June 2002; and Peace United Methodist Church in Orange County as his final local church appointment. He also served as Director of Congregational Excellence for the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church before taking early retirement to devote himself fully to a ministry of coaching, consulting, and training church leaders.
Upon leaving his Conference position, he started his company Excellence in Ministry Coaching as well as co-founding Coach Training for Leaders, an ICF-accredited coaching school, where he served as Director for both. Phil was an ICF-certified and UMEA-endorsed coach. He is the author of 12 books and a wide variety of training guides. Phil was a nationally recognized coach/consultant who has worked in 40+ Annual Conferences in several denominations.
Predeceased by his father Donald, mother Eunice, and brother Bruce, Phil is survived by his wife Becky, brother Stephen, two children, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Phil will be remembered for his steadfast faith in Christ, his deep love for his family, his passion for strengthening the Church, and his commitment to equipping others for ministry.
