At age 40 and having successfully raised six children, Emily Ann (Penfield) Pasquale needed a new challenge. She penned her first novel “Pandemic”, a murder mystery amongst the Cincinnati medical community set in the backdrop of the 1918 pandemic. Having graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing in 1953, she had many years practice assisting the UC General Hospital’s surgical teams as an operating room nurse. With those life experiences and her passion for reading and writing, she finished “Pandemic” in 1979. Over the next few decades, she published two more novels - “Continuing Education” and “Jane Ann’s War”. Emily had a strong interest in historical events, genealogy and recording the details of her extensive travels. Emily not only chronicled much of her life and travels, she also extensively researched her relatives and ancestors’ history. Both Emily’s mother and grandmother died young. She never met her grandmother and was deprived of the opportunity to really know her mother, who died when Emily was 18. However, her research brought to light relatives she never knew because her mother had “run away” from home at age 16 to start a new life, largely severing ties with her siblings at that time. In addition to genealogical research, reading and writing, Emily had an eye for antiques, was an avid birder, excellent cook and was physically active playing golf, tennis, and riding her bike.
Emily was born in Cleveland, OH on September 20, 1936, to Ronald and Alice Penfield. Her father was a dentist in private practice in Cleveland. Ronald had served as a dentist in the Army, moving Emily and her siblings around the country when she was in her youth. In 1958, Emily completed nursing school and began working at University of Cincinnati General Hospital. She married Dr. Andrew Jim Pasquale in 1958 and they moved to Georgetown, OH where he practiced surgery until his retirement in 1987. During those years, Emily raised six children before returning to nursing at the University of Cincinnati Hospital in 1980. After her retirement, Dr. Pasquale and Emily settled at Stoneybrook Country Club in Sarasota, Florida where Emily became a regular playing bridge and golf. She became very active with the Stoneybrook Board of Trustees, ultimately serving as the Club’s first female President.
At 89 years of age, Emily died of natural causes with family by her side. She is pre-deceased by her husband Jim of 62 years, her son Michael, and survived by two siblings: Scott (Gail) Penfield of Vero Beach, FL; Virginia (Scott) Llyod-Jones of Chesterfield, MO; and five children: Jeff (Margaret) Pasquale of Cincinnati, OH; Melanie (Brad) Remick of Lone Tree, CO; Amy (William) Schulte of Sarasota, FL; Scott (Lorraine) Pasquale of Chicopee, MA; and John (Hannah) Pasquale of Newmarket, NH; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Memorial gifts in the name of Emily Penfield Pasquale can be made to the University of Cincinnati, College of Nursing Scholarship Fund.
