Gerald William Metzger, ‘Jerry,’ went home to be with his LORD and savior February 14, 2026. Born in Toledo, Ohio to Mabel and J. Fred (’Ted’) Metzger. He graduated from Grosse Point High School outside of Detroit and went on to attend the University of Michigan where he graduated with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. While working for General Motors in Detroit, he completed his M.S. in mechanical engineering from Wayne State University. The automotive industry fueled his entire career and took him all over the United States and the world. He retired as a senior manufacturing executive. Jerry was considered a rebel back in the day for abolishing the executive parking lot and instituting profit sharing for union employees. His children were taught that every job is important to the success of an organization and to never ask someone else to do something you were not willing to do yourself.
Travel became a large part of his life and brought great joy to both he and his wife. Ultimately, he was able to visit six continents and 63 countries during his 89 years of life. The trip they made to Africa was one he had hoped to repeat but health issues interfered. He continued to enjoy international cuisine and could often be found relishing meals at local Asian, Mediterranean, and French restaurants.
Jerry was active in the church singing bass in the choir, serving on council, visiting shut-ins, and participating in mission trips to the Dominican Republic. He took pleasure delivering meals-on-wheels, marking turtle nests on the Venice beach, and ringing the bell for Salvation Army.
Hardworking, determined, selfless and devout will be how he is remembered by those who knew him. He was generous with his time and his talents, graciously supporting his wife with the baked goods and crafts she made for friends and neighbors.
Jerry leaves behind his beloved wife of 63 years, Millicent aka’ Mike’, daughter Amy (Tim), and son John (Elizabeth) plus five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Venice, date to be determined to allow extended family who live around the country to attend.
Well done, good and faithful servant!
Matthew 25:23
