Charles Ray “Abe” Abernathy , 77, of Rustburg, passed away Sunday, February 22, 2026, at his home after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Glenda Talbert Abernathy.
Born March 1, 1948, in Richmond, VA, he was the son of the late Eugene Harmon Abernathy and Juanita Duke Abernathy. He was also preceded in death by a sister Sandy Myrick.
He was a very active member of Rustburg Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher and Treasurer. He was a Mason and retired from BWXT. He loved golf and fishing but especially loved to be with his grandchildren and family. He never met a stranger and was loved by all that knew him.
He is survived by two daughters, Rashelle Talbert Reynolds (Todd) of Bedford, VA and Stephenie Rice (William) of Hillsborough, NC; two sons, Robert Vincent Abernathy (Sarah) of Rustburg and Edsel Ford Talbert, III also of Rustburg, VA; three sisters, Lynn Watkins ( Jerry) of Windell, NC, Duke Cheeley (Bobby) of Dolphin, VA and Melanie Stainman (Alan) of Sterling, VA; 17 grandchildren and many friends and his canine companion, “Chip”.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Rustburg Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends Saturday, February 28, 2026, from 11 to noon at Rustburg Baptist Church followed by a funeral service at 12 noon with Pastor Don Bailey and Pastor Rick Cole officiating. Burial will be in Cumbie Community Cemetery.
