Herbert (Herb) William Shafer, 78, of Lexington, South Carolina, stepped into glory and into the presence of his loving Savior on February 23, 2026. Born October 2, 1947, to Henry Lincoln and Jeanne Crowder Shafer, Herb faithfully served his country in the United States Army Medical Corps. He met his future wife, Marilyn Wenzel, shortly after joining the Army, and they were married in April of 1970. He received an honorable discharge in 1973 and, following his discharge, he attended Lancaster Bible College in Lancaster, PA, graduating in 1978 with a B.S. in Biblical Education. He spent more than thirty years working as a commercial and residential painter, a trade he practiced with diligence and integrity. Above all, Herb was a devoted Christian and longtime member of First Baptist Church of Lexington. He loved Jesus Christ and his wife above anything else in this world.
Herb was a caring and generous man, always willing to give his time to help others. An avid reader of theology, he found a deep joy in studying the Scriptures and discussing his faith. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn; his sons, Matthew (Elizabeth) of South Carolina and Nathan of Texas; and his older brother Henry (Hank) Lincoln Shafer, Jr of Tennessee. All who were blessed to know his steady presence and faithful witness take comfort in the words of Scripture: “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23). His life was marked by quiet service, deep conviction, and enduring love. He will be missed.
The family welcomes all to the Celebration of Life for Herb on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at First Baptist Church of Lexington, SC. Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM, and the service will start at 11:00 AM. A graveside service will follow at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethel Christian Camp in Gaston, SC.
