Dorothy Anker Dorothy Anker of Eugene died suddenly on December 14, 2016, at the age of 88. She is survived by her children, Wendy (Edward Reed), Anthony (Debra) and Martin; her step-children Terry Brooks (Barry McKenzie) and Allen Brooks (Rita Karambelas), and by her many grandchildren: Abigail and Nathaniel Reed, Lauren and Aaron Anker, Robert and Benjamin McKenzie and Stephanie Brooks, as well as by her many friends and extended family. She had two loving husbands, Herbert Anker and Robert Brooks. Dorothy was born in Brooklyn, New York, but grew up and lived in Chicago. Subsequently, she and her husband, Herbert Anker, began spending summers in Eugene. After her husband’s untimely death in 1976, Dorothy moved to Oregon and married Robert Brooks. Dorothy was a strong advocate for children throughout her life in a rewarding career as a child development professor and consultant. She had a deep commitment for nurturing quality, early childhood education and, as part of this commitment, performed preschool certification assessments well into her retirement years. She also became a devoted volunteer at the Eugene Public Library’s infant and toddler enrichment as well as the reading with the dogs programs. Additionally, Dorothy rediscovered a scholarly interest in the Yiddish language, and led a Yiddish Club at Temple Beth Israel, and enjoyed giving private Yiddish lessons to students from 16 to over 90 years of age. As her own family grew, she was just as apt to be found playing with her grandchildren, who adored her, as hanging out with the adults. Dorothy will be greatly missed for her generosity in sharing her knowledge, her laughter, her kindness and her ability to listen without passing judgment. A memorial service is being planned for early March, and an announcement will be made. Arrangements entrusted to Musgrove Family Mortuary.
