Bok Soon Jones of Salinas suffered a fatal cardiac arrest on Saturday afternoon, September 10, 2011, while sailing on the Double Angle sailboat race. She was born Kim Bok Soon on June 8, 1930, in Incheon, Korea, the eldest of many sisters and one brother. Her schooling was conducted under the Japanese system in place in Korea at that time. She was employed as a teacher in Incheon at the outbreak of the Korean Conflict in 1950, after which time she served in the secretarial pool attached to the United States military support units, where she met and married Pfc. Herbert Hayward Jones on December 23, 1952. They relocated to upstate New York in Alden in 1954 and migrated to Salinas after his discharge from the Army in 1957. Here in Salinas, Bok Soon worked on the line at the Old Chicago String Factory on Market Street, and was a civilian secretary at Fort Ord after completing her AA Degree at Hartnell College. She later joined her husband, Herb, as a salesperson at Jones And Gilliland Realty, soon becoming a broker and partnering with him at Jones Realty. Fluent in English, Korean and Japanese, she was actively engaged in the local real estate business for more than 40 years, with many cherished and loyal clients. She and Herb sponsered the immigration of all her siblings to the United States, whom now live in the greater Los Angeles area. She was nearly a 40-year member of the Elkhorn Yacht Club at Moss Landing and was currently serving in the position of Commodore and indeed, participating in the annual Double Angle Race at the time of her passing. She sailed, raced, and finished frequently in West Coast and Canadian waters. She was an avid sojourner, traveling extensively in Europe, Asia, and North America, in the company of family and friends. She enjoyed learning new things and experiencing different cultures. Next to her family, she most treasured the blessing of her American citizenship and was fiercely patriotic. She lived passionately a rich and compelling life, and passed doing one of the things she loved best, sailing. She fit no mold and there will not be another quite like her. She is dearly missed by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herbert Hayward Jones and three sisters, Chun Ja Kim, Ah Soon Kim and Stella Park. She is survived by her daughters, Kim (Patrick) Smith and Anna Marie (Gregory) Bates; sisters, Becky (Kirby) Hong, Betty (Tom) Kim, and Choi Cha (Frank) Lee; her brother, Young Min (Susie) Kim; four grandsons, Michael Smith, Peter Bates, Joseph Smith and Connor Bates; three great-grandsons, Byron, Sam, and Will; along with numerous nieces, nephews and other loving relatives. Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 14, 2011, from 1 to 9 p.m., at the Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas, CA 93905. Funeral service will be held Thursday, September 15, 2011, at 10 a.m., at the Healey Mortuary Chapel. Following services a luncheon will be held. A Family Interment will follow at the Castroville District Cemetery in Moss Landing.
