Dixie Jaylene Cameron horse lover, Willie Nelson singer, fishing hole seeker, grandchildren bragger, pool shark, partner in crime, proud mother and animal advocate died on May 10, 2016 after giving cancer the most incredible fight. Words cannot fully explain the spirit, strength and adventure that made up Dixie's life. Born February 21st, 1953 in Yuma Arizona to J.D. Maxwell and Janet Ruth she was adored by her parents for her spirited nature. Dixie's younger brother Dexter was her original adventure partner and frequently the target of her teasing. They were the best of friends her entire life. Dixie shared with her half Sister Natalie the Maxwell beauty, strength and love for their cowboy heritage. Thanks to her gypsy spirit Dixie called many places home but none more than Amador County where she lived for the better part of 48 years. She operated a food truck before it was cool, did "nails" for country music stars before they were cool, completed Medical assisting school, worked as a vet tech and a horse masseuse, owned and operated a limo and sold everything from goat soap to Fords. Dixie had many passions. She loved all music particularly live. Her countless concerts included the Beatles in 1966 and her last of many Willie Nelson shows in 2015 with grandson Jonny. She was a passionate friend proven by numerous life-long friends including the Lefty to her Poncho, Linda Bonneau of Plymouth. Of these passions none were more important to her than horses. She advocated for the compassionate treatment of all horses from wild mustangs to retired racehorses. Dixie attended Judson High School a private boarding school in Scottsdale Arizona where she made many friends and met her High School sweet heart Bob Cameron. In 1971 she married Jon Colburn and became a loved member of the very large Colburn Family of Plymouth. She was married to Jon, the father of her only child Jamie, for 16 years. They remained friends up to her final days. In 1986 she set out to find her High-School sweetheart Bob landing her in Gainesville, Texas. After reconnecting Bob and Dixie were married in 1988 in the chapel at Silver Lake. He was her partner in her final 28 years of adventures. Theirs was a crazy love that would make for a rousing country song. She was no doubt the proudest mother and grandmother on the earth. Her grandchildren Bailey, Jonny and Michael Lubenko brought her more love than imaginable. Bailey with her dance, reign as Miss Amador and kind heart; Jonny with his fantastic sense of humor and love of music and Michael the cowboy who carries on her love of horses. She shared a very special bond with her only child Jamie who she raised to believe she could accomplish anything in this world. Jamie was by her side in both the good and the difficult times as a daughter and also a friend and ally. She once said that the "Legacy" that she would leave behind in Jamie was more than she could have ever hoped for. Dixie is survived by her husband Robert Cameron, Daughter Jamie (Ronn) Lubenko of Fiddletown, Grandchildren Bailey Jaylene, Jonny and Michael Lubenko of Fiddletown, Brother Dexter (Carlin) Maxwell of Parker Arizona, Sister Natalie (Chris) McPherson of San Antonio, Tx. Aunts, Marlene Maxwell of Townsend, DE, Pat Ruth of Indio, CA and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Dixie's life will be celebrated on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 3:00 P.M. at the Amador County Fairgrounds. A viewing will be held on Friday May 20, 2016 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. She will be laid to rest next to her mother and grandparents in a private burial at the Plymouth Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson. Donations in her memory can be made to the Amador Community Foundation, P.O. Box 1154, Jackson, CA 95642 where a scholarship "The Dixie Cameron Equestrian and Western Life-style Memorial" has been established. The scholarship will be given annually to an Amador County graduate who exhibits a love of horses and/or the Western Heritage that she so deeply embodied.
