Marvin Grant Reckling, 89, was born in Comstock, Nebraska, on August 16, 1925, the oldest child of William Frederick and Ella Gladys (nee Carnine) Reckling. He was active in sports in the Comstock High School Class of 1944. Ida Darlene Hohman became his bride on February 16, 1947, in Broken Bow, Nebraska. They had been married 37 years when she died in a plane crash on May 27, 1984. As the 4th generation descendant of Nebraska homesteaders, Marvin farmed near Comstock until 1955. He then owned and managed the Sidney, Nebraska, bowling lanes. His skill preparing competition-level bowling alleys brought him to Westminster, Colorado, in 1957. After returning to his rural roots on an acreage near Longmont in 1966, he worked for the Longmont Lanes and retired in 1980 from Beech Aircraft Corp. in Boulder. His work ethic and technical skills won him numerous aircraft sheet metal work quality awards. His hobbies included rose gardening having had more than 100 varieties at one time. He also loved sports – especially the Denver Broncos. He began cheering them on in person when the team formed in 1960, then bought his season tickets in January 1961. His greatest pleasure came from his miles of bicycle riding in most of the continental United States and at least six foreign countries. He enjoyed Heart Cycle events (riding 1000 miles in 10 days) and many 100-mile day rides. He happily recalled that, at the age of 65 he completed one of several double century rides (with full panniers, sleeping bag, and other gear). Among numerous memberships, he supported Rails to Trails and the Adventure Cycling Association for more than 26 and 36 years. Survivors include daughters Marlene Reckling and husband Monty Murty of Laughlintown, Pennsylvania; Linda and Ed Linstedt of Mill Creek, Washington; Mary Staley and Jerry Rice of Aberdeen, Idaho; a son Dana and wife Heny Reckling of Evans, Colorado; 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Also surviving are his long-time special friend Clementine Coburn Fitch and his caregiver Linda Sheppard, his brother Hollis of Lincoln, Nebraska, and his sisters Twila Lenstrom of Buhler, Kansas, and Elaine Hyde of Boise, Idaho, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews across the country. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to TRU Community Hospice Care www.TruCare.org of Lafayette, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation www.jdrf.org, or bicycle Trips For Kids www.tripsforkids.org. Interment will be held privately at Foothills Gardens of Memory, Longmont. Carroll-Lewellen Funeral & Services are entrusted with arrangements. Service Information A service summary is not available
